Default X-Type 2006 Steering wheel Alignment.

Hello All,

I recently bought a 2006 X-Type with a little less than 100,000KM on the clock. A few weeks ago, the vehicle started experiencing slight variations, in the steering, when driving.

To fix it I took the car to a dealership and the thigh rod, for both wheels, were changed at no small cost plus workmanship.

Problem is that the steering rack was taken out as part of the fixing and after being fixed the steering wheel is no longer straight.

My taking it to another dealership would mean more cost and the first dealer has accepted to fix it by repositioning the steering wheel. My fear is that if the wheel is taken out it could create further problems.

Does anyone have any clues as to how the steering wheel can be repositioned easily so no problems will arise. The only alternative is to take down the steering rack and that is a bigger problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

I would recommend taking it back to the place that did the repair. When replacing any front end suspension components the shop MUST perform a front end alignment and associated steering wheel position adjustments!

I'd go back to the dealer who did the work and tell them to put it right.

It's a very basic mistake not centralising the steering wheel when reconnecting the steering. Absolutely infuriating for you looking at at off centre wheel when driving straight ahead but not dangerous.

Two ways to do this. Either remove the steering wheel and centralise it or disconnect the steering at the flexible coupling (item 4) and centralise the wheel before reconnecting.

chardy, they do not need to drop the steering rack. They should be able to make all the adjustments from the tie rod ends to get the steering wheel back to straight. If they are looking at pulling the steering wheel, then they are going about things the hard way.

2006 model has DSC. I wouldn´t adjust alignment from steering wheel.. Flexible coupling won´t work either. Steering rack axle isn´t round so there´s no way to adjust it from the coupling (been there, tried that..)

I´d go with Thermo on this.
