Default X Type cough

Hi got an X Type 2.2 Diesel Estate 2007. It recently developed a cough what I mean is it miss fires if you labour the engine such as not change down gear earlier enough. Now it misfires when you start it from cold and blows a cloud of white smoke out of the exhaust. this goes away after aroud 30 seconds.

Any one any ideas where I start???

Appreciate any help.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, yes have changed the fuel filter, no change.

It seems to just do it first thing and is alright after you have done say 10 miles, althought if you turn the air con off it cures it!

Hi Vendi

This happened to mine a while ago and was tricking to fix but easy to find.

At the drivers side (in the UK, guessing passengers in US. Opposite side to Battery) under the bonnet at the front of the car there is a 3 inch ish wide rubber down pipe. Find the pipe by facing the car, just to the right of the headlight and run your finger down the back of the pipe. Odds are there is a slit in the back of this air pipe.

You can replace or remove and duct tape it up and refit. This cured the fault in my car.

Phil,

Superb bit of troubleshooting

Hope this turns out to be vend1's fix.

The method for describing sides adopted by Jaguar (and most motor manufacturers) is that Left (LH) and Right (RH) is applied as if you were standing at the rear of the vehicle looking forwards.

The Parts Manual is set out like this and it removes all the confusion over driver's and passenger's side.

Hi Phil

Had a look and all seems to be ok down there and moving it when the engine is running makes no difference. It also hunt quite badly while on tick over when cole and the engine management light ids now on. Lokks like I will have to bite the bullet and run it into the garage.

Thank anyway

Bob

Hi

Just an update, looks like I got to the bottom of this after some advice from the guy in the next door garage.

Invested in a EGR valve blanking plate off e-bay for £4-19 delivered, fitted it and the car has been running perfectly now for around a month.

Only thing is the engine management light is on and I guess at some point I will have to get it switched off ?
