X-Type issues?

I have the chance of getting a 2004 X-Type 3.0 and want to know the downfalls of this model if there are any ... like the reliability. Is this a vehicle that isn't too expensive to own?
Any opinion (or actual experience) would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a new X-type owner (2002) , and I did a lot of research ahead of time before finally buying one. The major downfalls seem to be 1) automatic transmission, 2) 2.5 engine. And a general sense that later model years were better than earlier model years. What I got was the 3.0 sport with a manual transmission. I'm pretty satisfied (I think the previous owner was mistreating it.) They were getting 18 mpg, I'm getting 26. They had under inflated tires, which may have contributed to their poor fuel economy. On the other paw, with the gearing of the manual, it would be very easy to get the lower fuel economy. This thing really is geared for sport, not economy mode.
I'm still investigating my choices for a stereo upgrade (I've got the lowest possible model there.)
So, check the FAQs in this forum, it will talk about the issues.

make sure you get a warranty. I got an '02 3.0 X-type 2 months ago and i had to replace the lower and upper gasket of the intake manifold it cost about $300 cad. but luckily I had an extended warranty. all in all I think its a great solid car.

As stated Quandry.................check the FAQthread in the X type section.
Generally though, by the time the 04 model came out most of the quirks / issues with the previous models had been resolved, so if its been looked after and has any extended warranty, you could be onto a winner

All the best

Take it on a test drive and listen for noises. Some x-types have had problems with the 4x4 transfer box, which whines/growls. They are tricky to repair and can cost big money. Also 4x4 have expensive rear wheel bearings at around £200 each.
