Default x type lights on but nobody's home

hi guys, went out to start my x type today, ignition lights come on but then nothing ? tried and tried in vain to start the car but nothing . eventually it did turn over and start once, but then as soon as i turned the ignition off, it wouldn't start again. anyone any ideas what the problem could be ?
please note, im not very technially minded so you may have to explain in depth- sorry! and thanks.

Ben, odds are, you have a bad battery. PUt it on a charger and see if that helps any. Once you get the car started, drive it to an auto parts store and have them test the battery. If you can't get the car started, then you will need to pull the battery out and take it to the auto parts store. I'm placing money on a bad battery and I don't gamble. If they say that the battery is good, then you most likely have a bad battery cable. I can walk you through that, but you will need to know how to use a multimeter.
