X Type Limp Home Mode
Hello
My 2.1 2004 xtype has had a few issues with Limp Home Mode, if it has been idoling at the lights it will not go past 3000 rpm or if Im driving at 60km for a while same thing. This dose not happen every time but dose happen constantly. I have replayced the air flow meter, put through fuel cleaner and changed the Fuel and air filters. Can any one offer some advise.
Thanks
Jeffre

Jeffre, when you go into limp mode, do you see elevated temps on the temp gauge? This would be a likely cause. The other possibility is that your throttlebody is getting subjected to "excessive temps" (relatively) and it is causing the computer to see a problem with the throttle control, which will toss the car into limp mode. When you go into limp mode, I am assuming you are also getting the "Check Engine" light too. If so, get your codes read and let us know what code(s) you are getting. From there, we can give you a lot more detailed explanation of what your problem is.

Hi Chris "Thermo" Coleman and K'Re Ann
The temp stays the same, I did have the radiator split and dump all the water so the car turned itself off. Since then I have had this problem, changing the Airflow meeter has helped but not fixed the problem. When I go into limp mode no warning lights come on so unfortunately no codes.
Thanks for trying to help.
Cheers

Jeffre, let me do a little bit of research. But, normally when the engine places itself in a "Limp mode" state, it gives you an indication of the problem (CEL light, over temp light, etc). Let me see what I can find and then we will take it from there. This may be one of those things that going to the dealership or a reputable shop will be the only way to really know what is going on.

Jeffre, based on what you are describing, it is sounding like a fuel injector has stuck open, most likely on the bank 1 side. This would lead to the rich condition (p0171/0174), random misfires (P0300) and the damage likely (P1313) fault on the cat. As for actual damage to the cat, I will have to trust the mechanics word on that. But, based on what you are describing, simply replacing the cat will not correct your issue and will only lead to another cat needing to be replaced.

Jeffre, I would give Nalley Jag (sponsor here and a good place to use) an e-mail and see what they can do for you. They may be able to get you the part cheaper than going through a local dealership. Just keep in mind the exchange rate as that will play into things.
As for testing the injector yourself, can't say that I know of a way. Because you have the diesel engine, the pressures needed to test the injector are way higher than you can find at a local store. This is one of those things that I would be recommending you find a good diesel engine shop and see what they can do for you. I know it would seem silly to take the car to a semi/lorrie shop, but, if someone is going to know diesel engines, they will.

Jeffre, to the best of my knowledge, the X-Types did not come with a 2.1L petrol engine. They only come with a 2.5L or 3.0L petrol engine. The diesel engines were a 2.1L design. So, you may want to check on your engine size before you order the injectors. There may be a slight difference between the two engines (don't think so, but be safe and check).

You also might not get parts from Nalley as they are an NA shop, so I am not sure if they can get Euro parts if they are different. There is a Jaguar dealer sponsor here from UK which would probably be a better help to you. Duckworth, I think they are.

Thermo I'm liking your advice here. I'm looking at buying a 3.0 Sport that is in limp mode and does have the higher reading on the temp gauge, between halfway and three quarters which I remember from my last car is too high. My previous X-Type 3.0 ran with the temp gauge right in the middle pretty much at all times.
What is the likely cause of this? If I can buy the car cheap and fix it easily I would be forever grateful...
