I also am an advocate of the "real" thing, however, I also firmly ( no pun intended) believe that there is a place for silicone too.
I first encountered silicone around 13 years ago, and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Bear in mind there have been medical advances made in that time, so things can only be better!
