Default X Type p0301, p0303, p0305 ,p0174

I have a 2004 X Type. Car idles fine and runs fine unless I step on gas then it sputters and check engine light blinks. If I let off gas the light stops blinking and car runs fine again until I step on gas again. I have changed the IMT o rings but no change in performance. Here are codes its giving me. P0301, P0303, P0305, P0174. Is there a way to check for clogged cat converter. Thanks for any help.

Based on the codes you have a Cylinder 1, 3, & 5 misfire. These are located in the harder-to-reach area. When facing your engine from the front of the vehicle the cylinders are the three toward the back (See picture).

p0301-Cylinder 1 misfire
p0303-Cylinder 3 misfire
p0305-Cylinder 5 misfire
p0174-System Too Lean Bank 2

My first reaction is that you may have oil on your spark plugs. Clean or replace them. Second reaction is that you may have a vacuum leak (keep reading).

If it is a vacuum leak you can test it by starting your engine and letting it idle. When in idle spray starter fluid near the hoses or anywhere you may think there is a leak. If the engine revs on its own when spraying then you have a leak.

If not then my next suggestion is checking the breather hose and all other connection that lead into the intake manifold.

Blinking / flashing MIL = misfires so terrible they're causing cat. damage.

Thanks Guys, One more question. I'm assuming that intake has to come off to get at those plugs. How involved time wise is that task and is there a gasket underneath that would head to be replaced. I bought the car for my son a couple years ago to go back and forth to college so I'm not that familiar with it cause I don't drive it. Thanks again.

Refer to this thread: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...nge-faq-48128/

You are looking at a 30 min job to get to the plugs if doing this for the first time and about 6 minutes if you know where all the bolts are.

Refer to this Vid if it helps:

Update, so I finally got around to changing plugs (I must say it took me a while longer then 30 minutes) all six plugs looked good, no oil, good color, gaps were a little off. I also took the coils from bank 1 and moved them to bank 2 to see if maybe that was problem, but took it out for a test drive and same thing. Car stutters when you get on it and check engine light blinks, if I let of gas light goes out and car runs fine again until you stomp on gas pedal. Checked codes when I got back and same codes came up again. I'm ruling out plugs and coils, I checked for vacuum leak but couldn't find anything and I'm thinking if it was a vac leak wouldn't it affect all 6 cylinders? Any advice on where or what else could be causing this. Thanks for any help.

Reportedly the EGR valve can cause this type of issue.

Many leaks DO affect all the cylinders. Find a professional to fix it. And soon or the cats will need changing as well.

Scooters,

Did you find the root of the problem? My wife drove through a puddle after a rain storm and now our 2004 x-type (3.0 6 cyl), the car runs rough when I start it and there is a fuel smell. The codes are p0301, p0158 and p0303. Their not the exact same codes you had but I wanted to see what the possible solution could be. Any feedback will be helpful.

Took the car to my mechanic and they checked for vacuum leak and found none. They went thru whole thing and couldn't really pinpoint problem but suggested it was probably CAT on that bank of cylinders and wanted $2000 to replace it. Sold the car for $5000.

Thanks for the reply and hopefully you were able to get a good replacement.

Sorry for updating such an old thread but I stumbled on this looking at P0301 errors and I wanted to point out the last post here saying a rear catalytic convertor can be replaced with a $50 install is NOT for the X-Type, this part and repair estimate are for an S-Type. Replacing the rear catalytic on an X-Type will require $50 in band aids, many apologies to the neighbors for teaching their kids bad words, and at least some psychiatric therapy when you are done.
