Default X-Type rear seat removal

Can anyone help with how to remove the rear seat of my 2008 X type 2.2d auto? My boot won't unlock and I've tried a bad earth and WD40 in the ignition barrel but neither work so I need to know how to remove the rear seat so I can get into the boot?

Many have tried and only a few have succeeded in getting into the boot/trunk via the seats. But even then, opening the lock is not straightforward!

A much better way is to drill a small hole in the boot/trunk lid behind the number plate and operate the catch manually. This link will give you a full history and where to drill the hole!

It is a tight squeeze but you can reach through the sub frame in the boot to get to the lock. Once I got in I ended up splitting the lock cover to enable access to the lever to open, as it was the easiest and cheapest part to replace / fix where I was. I've now got the cable tie in place if it ever goes again, ended up being a broken cable in the rubber shroud holding the wiring loom on the left causing the fault, if that's any use.
Pull the bottom seat from the front to lift up, its only held in by a plastic clip, then manoeuvre the seat out pushing the seat belt anchorage clips through the holes in the seat. The rear seat is held in place by 2 torque bolts at the bottom, once out slide the back seat up lifting it of the top clips and it will release and come away. I found it best to take the rear head restraints of after the rear seat was leaned towards the front of the car to get it out of the door aperture but didn't have the room to remove them while the seat was in place. Once the seats out of the way the rear carpet / sound cover in the boot is just held in place with push grommets and you can get to them from the cabin to push backwards releasing the carpet and accessing the boot.

Its a tight squeeze to get in there with a torch etc, I tried shoving the kids in at the time but they complained to much.. Have fun and enjoy the contortionist positions you will no doubt get into doing the job

That link no longer seems to be working..

I have the same issue on my very early 2001 x-type (UK spec). Boot won't open, though perversely the warning light "boot open" is on permanently preventing the car from being locked remotely using the key fob. I can lock and open all four doors using the key manually. .

I have read several different recommendations (and some hooror stories - but what is the best solution for this early car ?

Remove the rear seats
Try drilling a hole behind the number plate ? (can't find details, just references to this method?)
Smashing the left hand light cluster?
Any other suggestions

Thanks in advance
