Default x-type...severe steering "lurch" at high speed turn

2005 x type.

Front bearings checked and AOK. At speeds above 30 mph and initiating a right hand turn the car "lurches" harder to the right. As I come out of the turn and straighten the wheels the car lurches back left. I can dive into a left hand turn as fast as the car allows, no problem, no lurching. A right hand turn only. The car may lurch at lower speeds I just don't notice it. I sense that it is a steering problem. The problem occurs going uphill, downhill, and on flat terrain. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

randybyers11,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Check your tie rod end , ball joints or your stabilizer bar end links. Check those out and let us know. Also your right wheel could be out of alignment

Good luck,
The Dr.

Randy, I want you to try this. Enter a large sweeping turn in the direction that you have this issue at say 25 mph (under the speed where you normally have the problem). As you are in the turn, step on the gas (in a controlled method) like you were going to pass on the turn. Did the back end of the car feel like it was going to come around on you or does it feel like the front end is the end that is moving? If it is the back end, then odds are you are looking at bad control arm with some play. If it is the front end, then you are most likely looking at either a strut or strut bearing that has too much play. A little bit of playing with components by using your hands to make things move will normally show where the play. So, like on the front end, you can jack up the front end and get the tire off of the ground. From there you can place a pry bar under the tire (NOT YOUR HANDS!!!!!!) and then try pushing the bottom of the tire under the car as you watch the top of the strut/strut bearing for any movement. If you see things move, then there is your problem. You may find having a second person with you will make things easier as one can apply the pressure as the other watches all the joints for any play. You can check the tie rod ends by putting your hands at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and attempting to turn the wheel like you were making a turn using the steering wheel. Again, you are watching the joints to see if you can spot any movement. If you can see movement between pieces, that is where your problem lies.

Default Lurch - diagnosed

chris; your suggestion was quite valuable. With the wheel jacked and using a pry to move the front tire under the car - net'd no movement. Placing my hands at 3 and 9 o clock on the tire I witnessed significant movement. With the help of an assistant I has able to identify the driver side lower arm ball joint as the problem. I will replace the entire lower arm unit with new bushings and lower arm ball joint as one new unit and report back. Thanks again...R

Randy, not a problem. That is why we are here. You are doing the same checks that your local mechanic would have been doing. Atleast you were able to spot the problem and now you have a solution.
