Default X-Type won't Start

Hello,

Today while driving my Jaguar X-type 2.0 Diesel (55, 120k Miles) it suddenly misfired then there was a slight clicking noise, then a puff of black smoke came out of the exhaust and the car suddenly cut out. I had to pull over and the car will not start. Could this be an injector fault or something more simple?

Thanks

Conzy56, first off, welcome to the forums. As you will find out, there are lots of very knowledgeable people around here. So, get yourself a cup of Joe, sit back, and enjoy reading. We do ask 1 thing though, please do an introduction in the "New Member" section. We are a slightly different car group and we like to get to know what another. There you will learn who the movers and shakers are around here.

As for your problem. From the sounds of things, it is sounding more electrical than anything to me. I would first see if you can obtain the codes out of the ECU. I am thinking that your ECU failed, resulting in what you are seeing. That puff of black smoke was more than likely the result of too much fuel getting dumped into the motor. Now, I am making the assumption that when you attempt to start the car, the motor still turns over. If when you attempt to start the motor, you can hear a click and the motor does not turn over, then you have had a catastrophic failure inside of the engine. This will also be evident if you leave the door open to the car and watch the dome light as you start the car. If the dome lights get very dim, then your starter is pulling lots of power, indicating that the motor has siezed up.

Unless you are mechanically inclined, I would say that this is going to be a good one to take to a mechanic to have them look at.

The problem could be any number of things, electrical etc., but from your description it sounds like it might be a turbo issue, ie disintegrated turbine. As Thermo suggested, you probably need to get it to a good shop for diagnosis.
