#4 plug is the middle plug on the side of the motor facing the firewall. So, you will need to pull the intake off and then go after things from there.

It is possible you have a little bit of oil inside the plug well and that is shunting part of the spark back to the block vice firing in the cylinder. Once you get access, it should be fairly simple to figure out what is going on from there. If you are not sure about the coil, then swap it with the #1 cylinder, front of the engine, behind the passenger headlight. That way, if it is the coil (by the misfire moving to the #1 cylinder), you can replace the coil without having to remove anything.

Thermo, are you sure about that? http://www.bluejag.co.uk/Jaguar-XTyp...der-Layout.php

Isn't #4 the middle plug on the side of the engine closest to the radiator/air filter? I believe this info can also be found in the specifications handbook. Either way, cylinder 4 should be in bank 2, which is closest to the radiator. #1 should be facing the firewall.

blackcat, you are correct. For some reason I have to look at a chart to see where the cylinders are for this car. Just when I think I have it figured out, I get it backwards.

Juan, as Blackcat pointed out, #4 cylinder is under the air box, not on the back side of the engine. This makes getting at it easier. I would still recommend swapping the coils between #4 and #2 (the coil to the left of #4 which can be replaced without pulling anything off of the engine).

Update report

Ok got some time on my hands so I took out the #4coil which was the middle coil under air filter box - replaced it with # 2 which was on left - code went away no issues - I also took out #4spark plug to check out its condition which it was still good - but did notice before taking the spark plug out I notice dirt & derbree ,#2 didn't have nothing - maybe also the cause of the code - I cleaned out the coil & around the spark plug slot - I've been driving it for the pass three day no issues

Ok after two weeks switching coils got a new code which is P1396

Researched it and only found this issue on other model type of jags not Xtypes - they states (it bank 2)-0r ( VVT solenoid faults.)is this releated to my issues with coil # 4 by switching out coils might coil is bad ?
I also recently went to dealer for an outstanding recall to reset my ECM -

Hey I just changed out the VVT solenoid code still there p1396
I also changed out gaskets camshaft cover is there any advice for what steps should I take to try to fix the solution I have to get my car inspected - strangely it looks like the car has no effect car driving perfect there is no check engine light on dashboard but when I use the reader it shows up any advice would be great

Once again I had a issue. P1396 had it for over a month I just changed out the solenoid + gaskets no luck code still there after very expensive repair - it may be wires if so how do I inspect wires or fix - my car is already rejected I need to fix this ASAP -

Juan, if the CEL is not on, then the code has cleared itself. You should be able to clear the P1396 code and the code should remain away and after a little bit of driving, the P1111 code will appear.

As for inspecting wiring. What you want to first look for is any signs of exposed copper. If you can see the bright shiny copper, you need to cover it up with some sort of insulation (heat shrink is good, Raychem tubing is best, but hard to find, but electrical tape will suffice). Next, follow the wiring and see if there is any spot where the wiring seems to make a sudden change in direction. That is normally a sign that the copper inside is broken and things are only being held together by the insulation. This normally results in an intermittent problem. You can even try bending the wiring slightly over say a 2 inch radius. If one wire kinks, you have found your broken wire. Finally, take a look at the plugs. Where the 2 halves of the connector meet, this surface should be shiny silver. If it is rusty or very dull looking, you may be suffering from a high resistance connection leading to a loss of signal. You can use a small screw driver or scribe to gently scrape the surface to restore it back to shiny silver.
