John, when the transfer case oil was changed, how much lube was pulled out? Should have only gotten out something in the neighborhood of 400 ml if you had the proper amount in there to begin with. In a lot of cases, you will get very little out. In this case, it is possible there is internal damage and things are a bit sloppy, leading to the noises that you are hearing.

Along those same lines, it sounds like you like to drive your car harder than most people. Unfortunately, the transfer case doesn't like repeated hard take offs and will tend to flex a lot. This leads to cracking of the transfer case and again you get excessive slop in the transfer case leading to eventual failure. This can sometimes be seen by doing a detailed inspection of the transfer case and looking for oil leaks in unusual places (ie, not from the rear seal or the side seals for the half shafts). This would be indicative of a crack in the transfer case body.

I don't want to sound so doom and gloom on this. But, a lot of members have experienced similar symptoms and most end up with a new transfer case at some point.

hi its john. sorry for the late reply a good independant jag dealer did oil change. oil that came out was the correct amount and fairly clean. but there was a small metal fragment stuck to the drain plug which is magnectic. oil which went in was the correct castrol lube.

could also be the tranny - might have a synchro on the way out. Do you have any issues with shifting - is it smooth or trouble getting it into gear sometimes?

John, I would have the tranny fluid changed and see what that looks like first. That may be a little bit better choice given the situation. Normally it is the transfer case that acts up. BUt, in this case, with the hard shifting of the tranny, it is a possibility. A good tranny shop should be able to get things straightened out for you.

The transfer case oil costs $20. It is probably the job itself that is costly. There is no way, as far as I know, to reach the transfer case refill plug without removing the transfer case. So either you remove it, refill it, and then re-attach it, or you drain and refill from the drain plug. That latest process has been described on the JaguarForums many times.

For your information, I have pretty much the same problem as you do. My transfer case (mind you, this is my second one) has been very noisy lately. It feels like bearings rubbing against each other, with the noise being worse when the car shifts in 4th, and I can also feel the vibrations. The noise is mostly obvious between 40 and 70 km/h. And just like you, no I don't drive my car like it's a sport car.

I have removed the drain plug from my transfer case and no oil at all came out so I filled it. The noise seemed to be gone for a couple of days, but it came back very quickly and I have no idea if it lost its oil, or if despite refilling it with oil it was already damaged, or even if after all the noise is coming from somewhere else like the tranny.

Also for your information, I have a quote from my dealer to replace the transfer case and it is roughly $4,500 canadian dollars. 2,800$ for the transfer case itself, some 10 hours or so of work at 125$/hr, plus taxes.

The car drives itself well enough despite the problem so I'm gonna keep it for as long as I can, but I totally feel you when you say that it's annoying. I've had literally zero problem with the car besides a small accident and the headlight bulbs going out, but those are not related to the reliability of the car. But the transfer case problem is really ruining everything.

i know what u mean i had oil and a seal replaced on my 03 xtype se it cost 450 pounds at a independant jag dealer there was no loss of oil and it was fairly clean.the only way i can describe the noise is that it sounds like machien gun when powering through the gears.spoils a smooth drive.

Default TC Case

FWIW, I sell a kit that makes changing the lube in your TC easier than changing your engine oil. Search the forum and you'll find quite a few mentions from folks using my kit.
