I am finding my 200PS version pretty much OK, although it is noisy on start-up and whilst it warms up, (to me, anyway, used to petrol engines). It is also rather slow off the line unlike a petrol engine. This is my first ever diesel car. I do like the 45 mpg though.

The only thing worrying is the cam drive and its chain is at the back of the engine next to the flywheel. Not good for the owner of a used one that needs a new camchain ! The dismantling would be horrendous, an engine-out job, I reckon.

I love the diesel engine start up thou it is not noisy at all like some owners stating, but gurgling. The sound is way better then the petrol barely audible ticking.

I have the 180hp engine and I mostly drive using ECO mode, in this mode there is a lag, but here is the thing. I read a lot of reviews before particularly getting the diesel engine one that people who took it for a test drive or as a loaner complained and hated how slow car is. The problem is that some sales and service people don't explain or know that switching a car to normal or sport mode changing the way how car responds during acceleration. There is a big difference between 5 modes and the best one I find is dynamic with sport allowing you to use the paddle shifters and switching the gears yourself. Moreover, even in automatic Normal and Dynamic mode the car is alive and refined complimented by higher toque and low fuel consumption you can't beat.

It's been several years and you can already say what this engine has potential problems. I can't find information about its failure anywhere. I want to buy XE with this engine but I want to make sure beforehand.
I have a choice between Audi A4 B9 150 or 190HP

Note sure when it came in, but my May 2017 XE is Euro 6 and has an AdBlue tank to be filled up every so often.

My friend owns 1984 Mercedes 300SD diesel. He is the second owner purchased it in 1989, the car has by estimate 1,000,000 miles. The mileage is estimated because after certain XXX,XXX miles an analog odometer just stops counting. The car is rusted inside out, but the engine runs still strong that he wanted to buy the same car with a good body and swap the engine.
That said, if the Jaguar (or Brits) managed to build anything similar to Germans this engine will last forever. Well, if I would decide to keep this car forever I would purchase the Prestige trim. Only the problem might be that after 30 years we might have scarcity of the mechanics who will have an experience to work with the diesel engines.

Regarding the Ad Blue, the first fill up was done at about 3K miles by the dealer, the second is at 13k miles I did myself using the Peak BlueDef (AdBlue name is obviously trademarked) it cost me $24 to fill it up. I read that someone had the problem using Halfords DEF. The Halfords response was there is some incompatibility with the Jags engines. I'm not sure if it is the user error or undisclosed random problem, but this is all I read on JaguarUK forum.

And regarding my experience, sometimes I do experience a phenomenon which I find weird and funny. The car smoking or steaming from the exhast for 1 mile or 2 minutes especially after frequent short drives, but it happens extremely rare, just white light odorless smoke that attracts everyone's attention.

I had a problem in Mazda with white smoke as oil got through the injector seals

Have you had any service adventures with this engine, or maybe you read something about its malfunction?
Before I buy it, I want to know what to look for.
