Default Cheap OBD2 scanner for reading engine fault codes

my apologies if this has been answered. I tried searching and didn't find any XE specific OBD2 scanners.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap scanner to simply read fault codes? im not looking for anything crazy, just something that lets me see what the faults are before rushing to the dealer

thanks!

Another option is to go to Autozone, they’ll read the codes for free, though they may not be doing that right now.

thanks @lusor , i used to use a rosstech vagcom cable for my VW but that wont work anymore

i decided to try an autel ms309 since it was cheap enough and easy to buy through amazon. worked super quick and is much less annoying than an app based ob2 which iv used before that can be difficult to connect. you can read codes within 20 seconds with this thing. so far i think its perfect for the job.

we will see how it holds up but i dont expect issues like i have with the bluetooth connectivity based devices that stopped connecting after a while

If I'm not mistaken, Jaguar requires a special type of OBD2 scanner to read its codes.

Almost correct. The cheap scanners can read some but not all, which makes them pretty useless really. This is what you need: -

I'm using this bluetooth OBD2 reader (and the Torque app) and have been able to pull codes & diagnose a couple of minor issues:

That said, I am experiencing the low battery behavior that I've read about in other forum posts that might be a result of using an OBD2 scanner... look that up before you get one... it's a bit annoying. It's on my todo list to troubleshoot/see if I can fix.

Edit: Here's the big thread on OBDII readers:
