Default Scan Tool Recommendations

After several months of trouble free ownership our check engine light came on driving to work a couple of weeks ago. Although I have a fairly high end OBDII scanner in my shop it did not play very well with our 2018 XE. I was able to diagnose the issue and it is being taken care of but I clearly need a more compatible scanner. Any recommendations?

There is a lengthy discussion on scan tools in this thread in General Tech Help:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...-%2A%2A-33347/

For powertrain codes that trip the MIL, many cheap tools are suitable and Torque android with a bluetooth interface is a convenient solution.

However, modern Jaguars use extended codes (Pxxxx yy) and basic code readers cannot read the extensions. For in-depth troubleshooting, many members use dealer level Jaguar SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics) with an original Mongoose cable from Drew Technologies or a clone.

Thank you for the reply -- I searched before posting, just in the wrong place.

Are there versions of SDD floating around that can be used by someone who isn't working at a dealership or approved shop? The only one's I could find on the net when looking were old enough to have no idea what the XE was. Newer ones required login to JLR servers in order to work.

I had to go to SDD v1.50 for my 2014 XK - it wouldn't connect with earlier versions. SDD is intended to run online with a connection to JLR servers but there are cracked versions up to v1.50 which will run offline. Nothing after that will work offline as Jaguar have changed the way they deliver SDD by altering SPA (Single Point Authorisation) and removing the VDF's (Vehicle Definition Files) from the package on their server.

Never thought to try SDD v1.50 on the 2018 XE I had recently as a loaner for almost three weeks but have no reason to think it would not work for troubleshooting DTC's. Naturally, any offline version is not suitable for programming modules.
