I agree PS4S all the way, and my exerience of pirellis is the same fragile.
The PS4S made a masive difference to my XES. Ride wise I find it fine, and I'm running 20" Propellors its fine, and I have added bonus of enjoying the 'handling and grip' when faced with large potholes.
If you want a rim protector go for the Std PS4S,
If you want quiet get the 'Tesla' rated tyre (can't remember the 'letter') - as they have foam on the inside to reduce the noise, however you will not get the rim protector.
