Default Valve train noise?

Has anyone noticed at about 3/4 throttle that it sound like a lifter doesn't have the right backlash set? At least that is what I am thinking as I have had that experience on a different vehicle project?

About 3/4 throttle or under a mild load it just has a "loose" lifter sound. It is very faint but noticeable from the cockpit. I put it the shop and they said it is normal after about an hour. I would be ok with that but you can tell it is not all of the lifters which makes me a little concerned it is not normal.

R-Sport 3.0 SC 2017 for reference

Wouldn't the XE have hydraulic lifters, which adjust backlash automatically?

Assuming they are working correctly they should. I might be wrong, that is just the sound that I could associate it with.

Cincy,

Check out this post on the UK XE forum...XE sewing machine rattle in passenger cabin (TSB). I could always hear the "sewing machine" noise ever since I got my car, which is the same model as yours, even when just driving with a light throttle. It would increase in frequency in line with engine rpm. In short the cause is vibration noise from the high pressure fuel pump makes its way into the passenger cabin via incorrectly made rigid ground/earth strap between the engine and the body.

Recently it started getting a bit louder under load between 2-3000rpm. I also thought at first something with valves or injectors. I haven't had time to take it to the dealer for the official fix but I did try the fix they were describing on the post using a short flexible braid between the rigid cable and the body to interrupt the vibration. It was almost unbelievable that this was the cause of all the ticking sounds and then harshness when accelerating hard. With the temporary fix all these sounds have gone. The engine sounds incredibly smooth now. It's transformed my driving experience. From what I've read not all dealerships are familiar with this technical service bulletin, which is # JTB00483V4.

This might be your problem.

Thank you very much! I will see if that does it.
