Red face Did I buy a lemon ?

Hello all !

I just bought this jag 2016 XF S. Used of course, the dealer gave me a 300 mile engine/ transmission/ timing chain warranty. I've driven it 240 miles this week, and just got a check engine light on.

The code read P0173 but they didn't "recomend any parts".
The car also has a smell of coolant after I drove it, but the reservoir is still pretty much full. However when I open the hood is like a sauna, so a lot of vapor and condensatiion builds up.
The exhaust pipe also has a bit of a dark lining hinting that its running a rich fuel mix. (Or so I think)

other tank these few details the car runs exceptionally well. It looks brand new, and it feels like the previous owner took amazing care of it. However, I'm scared that there is some impending doom about to unfold on me and it'll be after the warranty is expired.

I spoke to my grandpa and he told me to get a new coolant reservoir cap, and to change the air filters, since there aren't any other codes but are we missing something ?

Thank you all !

Drive it back to the Dealer and let them fix it. You have 60 miles left for the warranty.

That code indicates that fuel trim has reached it's max level (either max rich or mac lean). I think that's a bit of a rare one. Let me ask you this, not how many miles you've driven, because you've already mentioned that, but how many different trips (stops & starts)? I'm asking because I would be awful suspicious that this code had popped up and I cleared it and then it went through its required cycle times before popping up again. Meaning, some codes don't pop immediately, they get put in a bit of a gray status in the computer waits to see if it happens within x amount of drive cycles. If so, it pops again. It's all too suspect that such a code pops up shortly after you buying it. That's not something that just happens to that extreme suddenly. I'm with the others, definitely take it back to where you got it before you get to that 300 miles.

Side note, perhaps it was just descriptive language, but lemon laws would not cover this most of the time. Some states do cover used cars but i The bar is set pretty high on when it is considered a lemon.

Did you buy it at a Jag dealership?
My temptation would be to return the car and ask for my money back. I think the dealer could easily run out the clock on you. You could also force his hand and require additional warrantee...

Good luck.

HI, I think you made a great choice in your car. I have a 2016 XF and it has been pretty much flawless. The only thing other than regular maintenance has been battery replacement after 2 years. Great looking car and great gas milage. Yours is an S so maybe not as good of milage on it (vroom vroom). When you buy a used car it is a crap shoot. The previous owner sold it for some reason... But a high-end car like that is usually bought by a person that appreciates the fact that it is the type of thing that should be cared for and treated right. They possibly sold it because it was time for a new one rather than a problem with the car. Since, the physical condition of the car is like new, I think you can assume it was well cared for and serviced appropriately. That being said, you can never tell what is happening on the inside of the drive train. I think your Grandpa gave you some good advice in doing the simple, cheap and easy things first. You never know... it may just be the cap not sealing right. I had an error light issue resolved with a brand-new gas cap. Enjoy you new car.

Now not to scare you but, one thing to be aware of in these cars is the known issue with the plastic pipes under the supercharger. They are known to fail around 60,000 miles. This could be the cause of excessive moisture in the engine bay. If they fail slowly and just leak you may find it in time as I did with my XKR. If it fails all at once you could cause permanent damage to the engine. So, you may want to have that checked out. This may require having the supercharger removed or hopefully just an endoscope will fit in there and it can be viewed that way. I understand there is an updated plastic and metal versions of these parts available, so if you do have them replaced, they should last for years to come. I had that problem in my 2014 XKR right after I bought it, and I luckily had an extended warranty. Only cost $1000 on my end. More than wanted to pay, but the whole job was over 4K. That car has since only needed regular maintenance as well. 4 years now on the XF and 3 for the XKR. Ford Era Jags are supposedly some of the most reliable Jags made. You can read up on the issue here in the forum. Again, I don't mean to scare you, I think you made a great choice in a car. Just be aware of the known issue since you mentioned the excess moisture in the engine bay. Enjoy your new car.

How many miles? Coolant smell is not a good sign. As previously mentioned, find the source. It could be the coolant pipes failing, water pump weeping, or hose problem so don't jump to conclusions. But find the source. It also sounds like you're running rich from your various descriptions. Air filters? Dirty MAF sensor? If you take it back and they say it''s now fixed demand a warranty extension.

Nice car! I just picked up a 16 XF-S as well. Bought it from a friend and he just had the coolant pipe replaced (45 K miles) Receipt he gave me said $865 not 4K that was a rip off..

Besides the pipe also the Water pump can leak as well. Either through the weep hole or the plastic nipple on the return pip can crack. Both can be hidden unless you really pole around. Do it when hot, otherwise it can be tough to find
