Default Gear Selector Not Rising

Husband is working away and just called to say the gear selector isn't rising so is stuck 250 miles away from home!
any suggestions to at lest get hom home other than turn it off and back on again and disconnect the battery for a while and hope ?

Can the paddle shift gears be used with out selecting "D" on the pop up knob ?

Any advise or ideas gratefully received

The knob should still rotate to select gears even if it’s not rising from the console.

Wow, I didn't even know this is possible that you still drive the car and not getting stranded. Something to think about in case of an emergency. Thank you, Sir...

I had this issue happen to me here in Iowa last year, when it was -10°F. I was at a Kiwk Star, so I got a hot coffee. Placed it on top of the shift knob for a few minutes, then it broke loose and started working again. Note that mine wouldn't turn at first when it was in the down position. Hopefully I won't have this issue again in the future.

I also have this "clever dick" gearshift which is needlessly complex. Jaguars now no longer use it as they had to pay a licence fee to Ford for each one. Tata Motors no doubt thought it wasn't their job to bolster-up Ford profits !

Mine (XF 2010) had the same issue: the knob was stuck and not rising. Took the shifter module out. (e.g., see this video
). I thought I had to replace it. There is small screw at the bottom of the module that when rotated raises and lowers the knob (e.g., see this video
). Rotated it and it moved up and down freely. Connected the connector to test and it was fixed. Now it would raise and fall when turned on/off. I am glad that I didn't have to replace it. Will see if it gets stuck again (hopefully not!).

By the way, it was giving me P0850 and U101B error codes. Now they don't appear after I erased them.

Iman! Thank you so much for sharing these videos! We have had to replace a few of these for customers and our local dealership said they are on infinite back order! We have two salvage ones and I'd be interested to see if we can get them working again! Thank you again for this information!

Default Iman, did the problem come back?

Hi Iman, thanks for the terrific videos and instructions. I am having the same problem and error codes (U101B and P0850). Sometimes the knob fails to rise but I can still turn it to select a gear, other times it's completely dead. It seems like you disassembled the Gear Selector unit, made sure the screw that raises the knob turned freely, then re-assembled it. Did it remain fixed permanently, or did the problem come back? My problem is intermittent - it comes and goes seemingly randomly. Do you think the problem is mechanical (e.g. friction in the screw or mechanism that raises the knob)? I'm also wondering if brake pressure is an issue. Last time it happened, I really pressed hard on the brake and it suddenly worked. The random nature of this problem is really irritating! Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Car is a 2009 XF 4.2L NA.
