Default Loud Humming Buzzing Sound

Hello, I was hoping some body might be able to help with a problem that started today. I have an XF X260 20d and it is making a loud buzzing noise whenever the start button is pressed in either start mode or accessory mode. It will continue for about 15 seconds after switch off too. The noise seems to be coming from the drivers side (RH drive - Australia) around the headlight area. The headlights are LED's. It sounds like a relay or solenoid noise. It makes no difference if the headlights are on or off as the noise is still there and I am not sure the noise is from the headlight anyway. I can feel a vibration on the drivers side adjacent to the headlight if that helps. My google search suggests a cooling fan noise but I can't see any such fan nor do the diagrams of the headlight show any such feature. I certainly would be grateful for help. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

My guess ..........it's the fan cooling the high voltage circuit for the LED lights hitting something. That circuit is activated even when the headlights are not on and it stays on after the engine is shut down. The 'fan' is not a normal one that you can see spinning. It must be inside something because I've never seen it although I've looked for it. Someone correct me if my guess is off-based.

Thank you Mleskovar. That could be it. If I pull the fuse to the headlights and the noise goes away I guess that would nail it down to something in the headlights.

So I went to the fuse box in the engine compartment. I pulled the fuses to see which one stopped the noise:

Intercooler water pump - no change
Headlamp power wash - no change
Right side headlamp motor - no change
headlamps - the noise stopped.

It looks like something in the Right side headlights is going soon. The headlights work but some ancillary system in the cluster must be bad - probably the fan as you suggested. I'm 76 and YouTube says you have to take the whole bumper off to change the light cluster. I think I'll take it to an autoelectrician to see what he says.

Whole bumper? Probably just the bumper cover. Not as bad as it sounds. Bunch of push pin fasteners and a few bolts most likely.

Auto electrician? Unless he knows Jaguar XF he'll tell you give him some $ and he'll check it out. If he knows Jaguar he'll say give him a bunch of $. I bet if you take off the bumper cover you'll see where the noise is coming from. Maybe just a twig stuck in the the fan air inlet.

Yes, I might have a go. I was astonished at the cost of a replacement (even used ones). Whatever happened to the simple change of a light bulb. The parts code is GX63-13W029- KF have a look at the prices - I saw some up to $A3000. The units are sealed but I have nothing to lose trying to "unseal" it. heh, heh, heh.

I didn't see anything in that video that looks like it houses a fan assembly. I'm guessing the fan blows across the heat sinks? I'm also guessing you won't have to remove the light assembly to get to it. If you can get to a parts picture you can see where the fan is. There is probably one fan between the two headlights. When I first got my XF I noticed the fan noise that runs for about 5 minutes after engine shut down and starts up as soon as you open the door. It looks like about a two six pack job Good luck, no swearing unless you drop a fastener and can't find it.

Good Morning Mleskovar.

Raining cats and dogs here but welcome so far. I think you can briefly see the fan housing at 3:24. I'm Australian so there'll be plenty of swearing going on. Enjoy your day and thanks for the encouragement.

I think you're right, good eyes .... that black can like piece. I'm like you. Before I buy a costly replacement piece of anything I try to fix it first. Let me know if you run out of swear words, I have plenty for fixing stuff.

Lol, It wasn't my eyes. The guy who posted the video was asked by someone where the cooler was and he answered him so I was able to use that. I figure I don't have anything to lose in trying to fix it except my temper.

Hi. I have a Jaguar XF 2016 diesel AWD 132kW. I have exactly the same problem. I have tried to identify it myself several times. To me it comes down to a mechanical defect - specifically the tilting of the headlights. There are some broken teeth on the tilting gear. They identified in the service that my headlight is not shining well (high) but the Jaguar does not have the ability to manually tilt the headlight. What do you think about it? Thanks Rišo

So far I have not done anything about the humming noise on my vehicle. Istill think mine is the cooling fan. I thought I would wait until it actually fails. The levelling on LED lights is automatic according to the manual and there isn't any manual adjustment.
The headlamp leveling system comprises the following components and information from other vehicle
systems:
* Front and rear vehicle height sensors
* Two headlamp leveling, vertical adjustment motors
* Ignition in power mode 6 or above.

You can get a knock-off adaptive headlight to suit from AliExpress for about $Aust 700 but I am going to attempt a repair in the first instance.

Has anybody positively identified the source of the buzzing noise yet? My 2017 XF with LED headlights starts buzzing as soon as the door is opened and for 5 minutes after it is shut off. The right side seems to buzz louder than the left, but they both buzz.

In case anyone is following this thread I thought I'd let you know that there is no change to the headlights. The noise continues and the headlights still work. Therefore I haven't done anything yet.
