Pretty much any modern OBD-II tool, whether cabled, wifi or bluetooth will do the job, even most cheap clones. What is more significant is your preference of software and whether Android, iOS or other, and that may guide the connectivity. There are plenty of free and paid apps available for Android and iOS - generally you should choose something free with the option to pay (for example if you want to reset codes, not just read them). Certainly you should not purchase an app straight off, that really is not necessary these days.

iOS supports wifi and many Bluetooth LE adapters, and Android pretty much everything. Check the app for compatibility before you order an OBD-II tool.

Hope this helps!

Just get an inexpensive hand held scanner capable of resetting codes. $25US. Manufacturer specific codes require expensive software and delivery systems not worth the money spent unless you're planning on having a lot of failures or using it for more cars than your own. You can pay the dealer or independent many times to read codes for what it will cost you to buy a bespoke system. OBDII codes are generic for all cars.

Anyone please advise, which scanner would work with older, 1996 XJ Van den Plass (Daimler Six)? Tried one belongs to my friend, didn't work for cars as old as mine. Thanks

All cars built since January 1, 1996 have OBD-II systems. Yours may be an OBD I system. OBD was initiated in the USA (CA?) for the primary purpose of monitoring the emission control system. Also...wrong forum, try one for your year/model and you'll probably get a better response.

Instead of having the same questions asked across all the model forums, we centred scantool discussions in this General Tech Help thread:
