Default Reduced Performance Light - Timing Chain??

So we have the 2011 XF with 68K miles to the dealer for reduced performance. Running fine with no noises. They say timing chain replacement, $6,500 ($3,500 parts and 20 hrs at $135/hr). This seems like a gouge to me. Gears, chain, guides online are about $1,500.

I question how a worn chain with the engine running fine with no noises will generate a check engine light! Am I right on this? How long should a replacement take? Any help on this greatly appreciated!

This belongs in the X250 forum and tell them what engine you have (if there were multiple available that year).............
