A good filter is a compromise between good filtration and airflow, a formula best left to the professional. The carbon is what remove the smell, this is the reason I replaced my OEM paper filter with a generic carbon filter. I can't imagine you making your own carbon filter, but if you can do it, more power to you.

You welcome, Just noticed I screw up one of the filter dimension. It should be 210 x 195 x 30 mm.

Simples. You buy the filter medium and cut it to fit the hollowed out shell of the standard filter. Better air flow but with equivalent particulate filtering and much increased carbon presence. The minute carbon you get on standard filters doesn't do much. Go to a site that deals in filter material and you'll understand. Pick your particulate size, air volume, carbon presence. The only problem .... but it's a good one .... is the minimum quantity I had to buy will last a lifetime of cars I stack the filter material as much as the space allows to get maximum filtering and carbon exposure. The pleated paper filters in cars are excellent for keeping out even the smallest of particles but not so much for smells.
