Default 2 part question: 2010 vs 2011, and warranty

I currently drive a 2005 S Type 4.2 and am considering replacing it with a used XF. I'm curious as to what differences exist between the 2010 and 2011 model years (other than 5.0L engine standard in the 2011). Is one model "buggier" than the other?

Also, I'm curious with people's experience with certified pre-owned jags, especially in terms of the warranty (there seem to be some horror stories on this board).

Thanks in advance.

I purchased a CPO 2009 SC, which was one of the first cars off the assembly line in (gulp!) Nov 2007. The dealer replaced the dash cover and some miscellaneous trim bits as well as the key fob backs under warranty and that is it. No horror stories here.

Most 2010 models also had the 5.0L engine (the base spec for 2010 retained the 4.2L, the rest are all 5.0L). I don't think there are many big changes from 2010 to 2011 and the few issues that exist are likely to be the same. I have a 2010 SC which I bought CPO with the select certified extended warranty. I hadn't heard horror stories with the extended warranty (although most 2010 and 2011 are still on the factory warranty for a bit longer yet).

Personal preference, but I'd go for 2010 instead of 2011 and use the savings to step up to a higher spec. Lots of 2010 XFR for sale now (including a couple of regulars on this board). But in my opinion the supercharged is a 'steal' with the engine, suspension etc v similar to XFR at substantially lower price point.

Whichever you go for, you'll love it! It's a terrific car.

Keep in mind the 2011 will have, in effect, two more years of warranty - it is one year newer and comes with a five year, not four year warranty. Plus it includes free maintenance.

exactly what I was going to say. For the 2011 model years, the maintenance isn't the typical oil changes. It also includes wiper blades, pads and rotors.

I was also considering an older car when I bought mine. I had to go back to a 2009 s/c to find something equivalently priced to my 2011 premium. I am only willing to spend so much on cars and it was more important to me to have the newer car with more warranty than the older car with only 30 more horsepower. Not to take anything away from the s/c, it is a great car. But I think finding a 2010 s/c for the same price as a 2011 n/a is going to be difficult - even with similarly optioned cars.

A 5.0L N/A is 385HP
A 5.0L Supercharged is 470HP
A XFR is 510HP

All supercharged versions are far more than 30hp more...

That being said I would go with a 2011, in lieu o a 2010. Warranty and platinum coverage, essentialy free maintenance + more than just oil changes, but all wearable items, brakes (pads and rotors, wiper blades, etc...), with tires being the only thing not included.

And as some one else mentioned, 2011 were unique, as they were the only ones offered with 5 year (in lieu of 4 year) warranty, so you would actually be two years additional warranty.

Keep in mind dealers are aware of the platinum coverage and extra warranty, so it's not like apples for apples will be remotely in the same price range. As an example my dealership had a 2010, 2011 and 2012 XFR, and the price difference between the 2010 and 2011 was more than $15,000 or ~29% more than the 2010.

So if you have a budget you do not want to exceed, then you will definetly be stepping down to a lesser model if you go from 2010 to 2011...

My point was that a 2009 s/c, which is more equivalent in price to a 2011 na, is only 30 or so more horsepower. The s/c engine was changed for the 2010 model year.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. One additional question:

Anybody find the interior of the XF cramped? In looking at the interior dimensions, it's a few inches smaller (both in terms of legs room and head room for diver) than my S type. I'm 6'5, so I'm always concerned with leg/head room and I'll be disappointed if this is a deal breaker.

You will be the only one to answer that when you test drive the XF.

When I got a loaner XF and invited an average built friend for a test drive, I actually felt slightly cramped with two of us sitting up front. But, that is because my regular car is a HUGE XJL.

Now, that we also purchased an XF, I can drive it and do not feel cramped, at all. I think that the plain all-black interior of the loaner car gave me an increased sense of cramping as opposed to the light ivory interior of our new car.

Don't buy a sunroof model.

My cousin is well over six feet and a heavy set man. He fits fine but a sunroof might cramp him a little, his XF Portfolio doesn't have one.

Rear seat room is tight for a six footer, head and leg room are tight especially with portfolio seats.

Here in the States, sunroofs are standard on Jaguar sedans.

Just a quick update:
I fit in the XF just fine. I have no idea how they did the measurements for the specs, but it seems just as roomy (in terms of legs and head) as the S type, despite being listed as inches smaller.

Make sure you get the 5.0 motor. Much improved power and fuel economy. The 2009 XF was pretty much the old S Type with the new body. Same drive train and suspension. 4.2L and ZF 6 speed. Good but not great!
