Default 2009 XF SC Differential Oil Change

Well, I did a change today, as the diff was whining a bit. Took about 30 minutes. Replacement was Royal Purple 75W90 MaxGear fully synthetic differential oil. Car has just turned 60k miles. I managed to get about 600ml out, and it was stinky and very black. On my car (VIN R25xxx) there was only a fill plug, no drain plug. The fill plug magnet had about 2mm of gunge which I assume were very small metallic shavings which was cleaned up before re installation. I used a hand pump and modified hose with a 90-degree bend to pump as much of the old stuff out as I could out.

On the level, the diff took 1.6Q to fill back up before slowly dripping out, so there appears to be quite a lot of fluid 'missing'. Not quite sure where it went as there was absolutely no signs of leaking and all bearings were bone dry. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

- Tim

Well you actually don't fill the Jag diff the old school way of until it drips out the fill hole. You only fill them to the service/owners manual recommended amount, that's why yours had so little in it. If it will make you feel any better, I have mine filled the same way you do with Redline lightweight shock proof gear lube, no issues in about 20k mi. of driving.

Hi BW,
Can you point me to a procedure, as I searched and searched without much luck?

Thanks

1.25L is all mine is suppose to hold..If you only found 600mL, that's is a little low.....But I think you can fill till it dribbles out and you'll still be okay with no problems, it's the way it's been done for every differential I've ever done or heard of..I talked to my Jag tech friend and he said it is fine the way you did yours....the Diff is vented for oil expansion..so you're fine.
