Default Replacing Coolant Bypass Hoses

Has anyone replaced the hoses on the coolant bypass? I am trying to replace the outer hoses, bypass to thermostat housing. Really, just the driver's side. Do I need to take the upper radiator hose off? Anything else? Also, the big question, I bought two hoses and they seem to be about 1/2 longer than the ones that are on there, plus they are not as wide, even though the ones on there may be swollen? Should they look like the upper radiator hose that is right next to it, or are they a smaller diameter? Thanks.
