Default 2011 XF shifter will not come out of park

have a 2011 Jaguar XF with 33,000 miles on it runs flawless. Parked in mall, parked car, came out two hours later and turned it on.. shifter came up as usual but would not come out of park. Brake lights come on so they and sensor should be working properly. Had to get tow to Jaguar dealership. There was no message on console other than ignition on. Dealership claimed to run diagnostic test and it came back saying transmission fault. What does transmission fault indicate? There’s no way the tranny could have failed at this point.is the shifter faulty?

any suggestions helpful so I can talk knowledgeably to dealership.

thanks

I assume that they have scanned the car so ask them what the codes are. You can then use the attached to get more info.

What do they say that transmission fault indicates? What's the specific code?

And what do they say the resolution is?

First the jaguar dealership claimed there was a leak in the brake line that had to be replaced, not to costly but now they are saying the gear mechanism knob component (I'm probably not repeating it properly) needs to be replaced and that jaguar part is $1100.00

I'm not opposed to paying the money to get it repaired, sometimes you just don't know who to trust or what to do or say next. The first item made sense if the there is a leak the line is getting no pressure hence the line need to be replaced.

I'm not complaining, the car is 7 years old and this is the only major repair so far other than that it only needed tires, but just want to make sure it sounds correct.

Default Have you considered?

Perhaps the Jaguar workshop is not your best or most economical option?

There are plenty on eBay and a relatively easy part to fit I would expect.

See below examples:

Thanks for the help, unfortunately since I was stuck, I was towed to the dealership. Looking at YouTube the part is simple to install even for a novice like me. But they are not charging for installation and took 15% off the part itself. But is a worthwhile lesson learned for next time.Just have it towed home or to a local mechanic who is experienced with Jaguars. BTW is there a recall on these shifter knobs.

Thanks

I’m still going to ask about specific codes, and try to get some more information about this. I realize dealer prices are always going to be higher in repairs, just didn’t realize this part is even higher than what I’ve seen outside of EBay. Highest I’ve seen is $775 for brand new and 250 used
