2012 xf from boston area - rust concerns??
I'm considering buying a 2012 XF with about 12k miles located in the boston area. My worries is with the snow and salty roads, what are the worries with rust and other related issues from buying a NE car?
Rust concerns both short term or long term..
Thanks in advance..

Not sure what you are asking?
Yes it is in the salt belt so yea the car has been exposed to salt.
Yes it's better to buy a southern car but if this car fit's your needs then I would get it.

Just getting input, live in dallas and never bought from up north.. Just wanting input.
yes I know its better to buy local or in the south. The XF I'm looking at has the right combo of colors and options I want and there is no other 12s at this time that do.
So I could pass and wait for a 12 to show up.. Or the 13 V6 would also work, but will be costing more...
So I quess my main question is is there a worry for a 2 year old XF from boston with rust now or in the future..

Hey, I resemble that remark, I'm from Boston...
But na, modern cars are pretty resistant to that sort of thing. My concern would be the condition of the paint and the wheels. Those are what take the biggest hit from the weather up he'ah...
However, I would certainly use that as a bargaining position. I just don't believe that you would have to be very concerned once you bought the car.
What you might find are different options. Jaguar offers a cold-weather package that includes a heated windshield that is great for melting early morning frost off the glass instead of the driver being required to scrape it off. Heated side mirrors may also be part of that package.
I had that on my X-Type, but my S-Type, which was purchased in LA, doesn't have it. I really missed the heated windshield last winter.
But you probably don't need to be concerned with things like that... ;-)

P.S. I live in area that gets a lot of snow and they throw salt over the place.

I'm also in Boston area. I have a 2010 XF SC. See below for a photo of it a couple of months ago during the winter - fair to say that any car driven around here gets plastered with salt. Mine is a daily driver right through the winter, snow or shine. No issues at all with rust in any part of the bodywork - I had it detailed after the winter and it shone like new. Paint and rust protection is very good these days, so I certainly would not rule out a modern car from a salty-environment.
That said, as pab mentions below, there are a few things worth being careful to check
i) give the body a very thorough inspection for any blemishes - hard for rust to set in, but if scraped, dented etc and metal exposed that could be a concern (plus won't look as good!) But note that the hood is aluminium so a few stone chippings are not too much of a worry
ii) wheels for sure - particularly cars with the larger wheels. The pot holes are tough around here and wheels can bend pretty easily. I've been lucky with mine so far, but have them check if rims are bent (won't be visible on the car) and have them fix it if they are
iii) obvious point, but worth checking underside for any rust issues too. Again, mine has been fine, but no harm in checking
So - my overall guidance is if it's the perfect car trim for you, price is good and there are no issues, I wouldn't worry about salt

And just to clarify the photo above - my car is jet black... It just looks grey/white in the winter...

Hey bostonians, the car is at Woburn Jaguar. Any input related to them would be great..
AND if anybody lives close to that dealer and we looking for something to do, it would be nice if I had a local eye the car for me...
Thanks..

I don't know Woburn Jag - sorry. But it's the white 2012 XF I assume? If I were you I'd want to understand what has happened to it over the past year - first owner had it for a year and did 7k miles, then it was up for sale. It's a full year later now, and still up for sale with about 4k more miles on the clock. Has it been a loaner car? dealer demo? Or just something odd on carfax. Would be good to know the story.
Also, what are those funny white stripes down the side of the car - looks like someone has stuck on rubber strips along the doors (to protect them from dings maybe)? I've never seen that on an XF before - don't think it's usual for a 2012 model.
Car looks sharp - I love the interior. But if it were me I'd probably be more tempted by the 2011 XFR they have for almost the same price...
Good luck!

Hey Brit, I have been told it was a dealer car driver by a lady that worked there, so that might explain why it hours on and off sale without changing owners.
The door guard are to prevent dings, they were popular years ago, you don't see them much lately. As you said, first time I've seen on a XF also.
I want to stay with the base model, don't want the upgraded sports tuned suspension..
But I thought that was a good price considering it has the portfolio package and low miles. And I prefer to get the 12 with the v8. I have only found a couple of others in that range but they don't have that color combo.
Thanks for the input.

Agreed - good price and great mileage. If you love the colour combo and it has a couple of years warranty left, then doesn't seem like there is any risk here...
Given geography if I were you I'd probably pay a AAA or equivalent to do an independent inspection, check for any body damage, respray etc and give you assurance if you can't see it in person. It's not expensive.
Good luck - let us know what you decide!

>Hey bostonians, the car is at Woburn Jaguar.
Woburn Jaguar is my dealer, very reliable I have great faith in them
In fact, when I was shopping replace my X-Type with an S-Type they called me up to tell me that had just taken an STR with 48K miles in trade and would I like to take a look at it. Looked at it twice, once alone, once with my wife, car was beautiful. Was so close...
But before I could act they called me back to say that they had just taken the car into the shop to have a look (seems the salesman had contacted me prior to the shop inspecting he car to prepare it for sale...) and that they found over $7K worth of damage underneath and that it had been immediately sent to auction.
I had no reason to disbelieve them since the salesman knew I was just a "write the check" away from making a deposit.
Anyway, I'm sure that if they are offering that car for sale that it has been completely checked out.
