Default 2014 Jaguar XF 3.0 Sedan - Need advice please

3.0L Supercharged V6 340hp 332ft. lbs.
83,842 miles

Hi - I am new to this and am hoping someone in the know can offer me some advice.

I am looking at the above vehicle that has a clean Carfax.

What would be a good price for this and - I am concerned about the mileage. Is 84K miles high or if properly maintained can it still have a good life in it?

Thanks for any info you can help me with to make a good decision.

This XF could have a lot of years left in it or could be a money pit. Hard to say. Other than Jaguar being rather finicky about the service intervals and fluid specifications, its like any other modern car, just more expensive to fix when something goes wrong. No records = No Sale.

But assuming it has maintenance history, the key is knowing what it is likely to need and there are too many variables to predict including how the car was used for commuting or travel, was it parked indoors or left to bake out in the sun, was it in a hot, dry climate or a cold, wet one, was it driven by a grandmother or a hoonigan, etc. With the mileage nearing 100K which is when Jaguars tend to start getting needy, I would highly recommend to spend a couple hundred dollars for a pre-purchase inspection at an independent shop. A mechanic can tell you what specific parts are likely to need service or replacement either right away or very soon. I wish I could remember who posted to give credit, but a wise man wrote on here that "The best money he ever spent on a car was for the pre-purchase inspection of the one that he DIDN'T buy."

And lastly, don't jump on the first XF you find. Realize that Jaguars are a rather "bespoke" vehicle that could be ordered with lots of different configurations and options, but also could surprisingly come without features you now expect as standard on a base Honda. For example, the seats in the base model do not even have lumbar support. Or if you really like to listen to your music, you may want to find one with the Meridian Surround sound system. Or do you need all wheel drive plus the pass-through rear seat for your snow skis? You can study all the Jaguar Sales Brochures to get an idea of what all was available but note the brochures aren't complete, mostly just glossy picture books. Just because an option isn't listed in one year, doesn't mean it wasn't available throughout the years. You may want to expand your search to find the right one. If you get one that has all the features you really like, then when it needs a $900 water pump, it won't feel nearly as bad.

Thank you for the very informative response. This helped me to slow down and think of what I am doing. I really appreciate it.

I will add on to this as I bought a 2014 3.0 XF AWD with 35K miles back in February. My pre-purchase inspection showed the car to be in excellent shape and recently serviced, and there was no coolant leaking or any other signs of issues. My specialist who performed the inspection also noted that the car had been given a full 30K service recently as evidenced by fresh brakes, tires, cabin air filter, battery (both main and aux) and other items that aren't immediately apparent on visual inspection. My specialist also told me what would need to be done at my own first servicing. Had red flags come up during the inspection, such as leaking fluids or signs of neglect, I would have passed on it.

Given this info, I bought the car. So far I've added 4K miles on it and no issues.

I just recently (7 weeks ago) purchased a 2015 XF 3.0 S/C Sport, 63,000 miles. The 130-point inspection, or whatever the dealership/mechanic can perform, won't find everything. I had 2 dealerships perform an inspection, 1 of them was a Jaguar dealership, both said it's a great car and in great condition with good records. 1 week later, I had a massive coolant leak from the crossover pipe under the supercharger. $1800 later, it was back on the road. Now 3 of my door locks are malfunctioning, 2 of them are module issues, 1 is a door latch issue. Those modules are also tied into the puddle lights which now aren't working as a result. There's another $1,000. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE MY CAR...but like the post before mine, you're buying a used car and have to accept the consequences. Labor rates at a Jaguar dealership are also higher than your typical garage, so there's that to consider when you need something serviced and don't trust "Bob" down the road. Find a late model X250 (like mine, haha) that has most of the kinks worked out, and make sure you have maintenance records. Most any Jaguar dealership should be able to pull the VIN and see what recalls were performed, service intervals, etc...

Sounds like you bought my 2015?

My 2015 XF hit 50k miles and then the car started falling apart....coolant leaks, thermostat, battery, alternator, power steering....on and on. Tow after tow.

LOL mine isn't a Portfolio so I think I'm safe...

I don't want to start thinking of this car as a ticking time bomb...it's the nicest car I've ever owned, and just hope that this string of bad luck is coming to an end.

The most important thing in owning a Jaguar is to have/know of a good independent repair shop! Find the shop, then start shopping for a car.

When people ask me about my Jaguars (well nobody ever says anything about the XF, but the XJ8 can't go a week without getting some attention), I tell them just don't buy a Jaguar out of warranty unless you can DIY most service and repairs. You've pointed out another part of why Jaguars depreciate so fast. A Honda, Lexus or Chevy you can take anywhere and get it fixed. But many shops are scared to work on a Jaguar and thus you need to find an independent Jaguar or European car specialist who knows he can charge you a premium. But that makes them a great bargain for us automotive enthusiasts.
