Default Air Con / Cooling Fan.

XF 3.0 sport Diesel 2010.

Hello All.

I have an issue with my AC only blowing cold when moving, i have looked at a few posts here and think i know the issue but not how to 100% test and confirm.

The charge in the system is as it should be, my son in law works at a local garage and has evaquated and re gassed the system just to make sure it has the correct charge.
It was already charged when i purchased the vehicle four months ago but i have only noticed the issue since the weather improved and thought it best to make sure the charge was correct.

The first thing i have noted is that the cooling fan does not turn on when the AC is switched on, i think this is the issue as no air flow means the system wont work.
When driving along the inside air is cold and when i stop at idle the air warms up, after moving again for a short time (less than 60 seconds) the air starts to cool down again.

The fan rotates freely by hand and i notice the fan does indeed spin on when the coolant is up to a high enough temprature, i havnt had the chance to check at what temp this happens.

Conecting my Autel i can only see a few data pids, Evap temp, high side system pressure and compresor amp draw.
At idle when switching the AC on and off the compresor amps go from 0 to 0.8 then back to 0 and i can hear the clutch switch on and off, removing the air box today i have confirmed this visually.
The evap temp started at 22 deg C (71 f) and the high side pressure was 135 psi this can clime up to just over 200 psi if i stay at idle and again no fan running.
When driving at 50 mph i had the the Evap temp drops to 4 deg c (39f) the amps stay at 0.8 and the pressure stays around 120 psi and the air is lovely and cold, after around 15 min of driving i stopped and watched the evap slowly warm up and the pressure go up to over 200 psi, the compessor amps stay at 0.8 all the time untill the AC is switched off.

I have tried comanding the cooling fan on using the Autel but it wont come on, again i have seen it on after a 15 min drive i asume this is once the coolant has got hot.
I would love to disconect the coolant temp sensor and see if the fan kicks in full speed asuming this is how it works on these cars like many i have had in the past. The problem is i cant find the sensor lol

I have access to my Autel and a picoscope so if anyone has any ideas on test that i can try it would be great.

Finaly can you all confirm i am correct in thinking the cooling fan should come on as soon as the AC is switched on.

The car is a XF 3.0 sport Diesel 2010.

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the link and confirming what i thought that the cooling fan should be running.

The pressure on the high side looks to be ok and the clutch switches on and runs the compressor as expected so not sure if this TSB fits with just the fan not switching on.
Do you know if it is the DPS that requests/signals for the fan to run, its a lot of work if its possibly something else stopping the fan from running.

Thanks again for your time.

Just copied this from FB........

Hello Jag owners! If I can save someone some time and money— if your AC in your XF blows cold while on the highway but warm when in traffic or parked it’s most likely a control valve that’s inside of the compressor. There’s actually a Jag service bulletin out for this problem. My AC and fan weren’t working and spent almost $1600 USD to replace the fan and control module. That still didn’t fix the problem then after further research it was a $75 part which is the direct pressure control valve that slips inside of the compressor. If this part is bad it most likely won’t allow the engine fan to turn because near the condenser has another pressure switch that operates when the compressor is working properly—it opens and closes as the pressure comes from the compressor to the front of the engine through the condenser. This in turn allows the fan to turn on and variable control speed based on the gas pressure coming through the system. The fan also works from a temperature switch near the radiator. That’s another subject. So if the pressure control valve inside of the compressor has malfunctioned then there will not be pressurize gas that pushes forward to the condenser and will not activate the pressure switch which will not turn the fan on. I guess on the bright side I have a halfway rebuilt brand new system so I’m not really complaining but if you experience the problem I had check for that $75 part first before you do anything else. Cheers!
