Default Awd rear diff appendage. What is this?

Glancing under the back of my new XF I notice an aluminum canister bolted to the right rear corner of the rear diff, what is this?

That appendage on the rear diff is a mass damper to help keep the diff gear whine quite and smooth out any vibrations.

Is that something unique to the AWD versions? When I was back hone in the states, I noticed every XF I saw had that canister. Living here in the middle east, I have yet to see one, including mine, with that canister.

I can't tell because we get awd or XFR which has the electronic LSD.

It wasn't on my 4.2 '09.

Every 2013 Jaguar XF that has the 3.0 or the 2.0 engine that has arrived at the dealership has had this on the rear diff. It does not matter if it is AWD or RWD.

The workshop manual does not show a picture of it but there is a tech note that says a mass damper may be added to some models.
