Have been having a "Battery Not Charging" message occasionally showing up on the dashboard screen between the tach and speedometer. This has occurred when driving in city traffic and when driving at constant speed on freeways. If I stop the car, turn off the engine and then immediately restart it, the message does not reappear. My XF is an AWD 2013 with the 3.0 supercharged engine. The battery is a year old and the voltage level checks normal.

Any thoughts on what is causing this? Is it a sign of something starting to fail?

 

Using a digital multi meter, measure the voltage at the battery, during a high idle. You might need an assistant to keep the rpm’s at around 2,000. If it’s not reading between 13.7 & 14.3…suspect the alternator. Also, have the battery load tested. Yes, new ones can go bad.

 

If you have a suitable diagnostic tool you can monitor the alternator output voltage in real time. Use a Foxwell NT510 or similar.
