Brakes
With some trepidation I report that the emergency brake boost feature on the XF seems to work just fine. I was initially sceptical as I like to be in control of my car and dislike the car doing any of the thinking for me. I dislike automatic transmissions for this reason but really like the ZF in the XF. I dislike cruise control but find the XF cruise very handy and functional. I dislike traction and stability control but have to say that the latest software in my XF is very good indeed.
Finally, I thought I would dislike a brake system that puts the brakes on much harder than I think is needed when I brake sharply. However, I report that I now like this feature also. I had occasion to rely upon it in heavy rush hour traffic the other day. It is actually quite intuitive and seamless in the way it works.
The software detects the rate at which you press the brake pedal rather than how hard you press and increases the power assist if you press the brake pedal sharply. At slow speeds this can be disconcerting and I found it unpleasantly so. However, at more normal speeds I have found it works extremely well. The brakes go on quite a bit harder than you initially thought was necessary but that gives you that edge when you brake initially which in traffic may be instinctive to some degree. What I liked best is that the driver can easily modulate the effect during the emergency braking event by holding or even easing the pressure on the pedal right after the initial sharp braking event.

I liked my X Type even though it was not well built. Owning that entry level Jaguar introduced me to the idea of actually owning a bigger Jaguar that was also fun to drive (like some of the older smaller Jags from the late 50's and early 60's were reported to be). The XF is so far different from any car I have owned before that I was somewhat concerned that I would get tired of the ease with which one can drive it. Not so, I like it more and more as I drive it more and more.
