Brakes
Hello fellow Jag owners. I need to re-do my brakes, front and rear and have no problem actually doing them myself, however I was wondering if any of you had a preference regarding which brake pads to use. Ones from the dealership or another brand? Of course the ones from the dealership are quite expensive and I can find cheaper ones, but not sure if that would be wise. Thank you for your input
Edobernig did a "HOW TO" thread on changing brake pads and discusses replacements. Also many other threads on this topic. Do a search and much info available just in the xf forum alone.

Cheaper is probably not a good way to go unless the savings come from dealing with the aftermarket. Dealerships mark up their parts as a necessary component of financing their service levels. Hype costs money.
If you buy the correct fitment recommended by any of the major brake component suppliers you should be fine. EBC, ATE, Ferodo, AAXIS(?) and so on. I think most brake suppliers have econo lines of parts and superior lines.
Most important is to match the type of replacement pad to your driving requirements. Most of us should use factory spec pads. "Higher" performance pads are frequently just higher tempersture range pads and perform poorly for road driving as they never reach optimum operating temperature.
"Dustless" or reduced dust pads are the holy grail of brake pads. They don't exist.

I have the ebc red stuff pads and their rotors, brake dust is minimal, after 7k miles the red backing plate of the pad is still clearly red. Either the dust is transparent or there is very little dust.
My wheels have not been washed in a month in the below pic plus it has had my greasy hands on it.

Ed's "How To" guide is a must read. I wish it was there before my first XF brake job! Just a couple things to add:
The 2009 (only) XF does not have wear sensors.
And thru much research, personal discussion with my tech and personal experience (completed two rear brake jobs 70k miles); I have found the old EPB reset procedure is not applicable to an XF. I'm sure there will be very qualified techs on here that will say otherwise. But we couldn't find anything in the current XF pubs that required a power reset.
After you have pumped up the brakes, seated the pads and have a nice pedal simply set the EPB. The motor will run longer and the pedal will move a little farther the first time and you may or may not get a warning message. Release and reset again, the second time will feel normal. If you did get a message; turn the car off and on, it will go away. My EPB sets firmly, releases freely and no abnormal wear.
