Default Buying my first Jag

HI folks, I've been looking around for awhile and have found an 2012 XFR 6 speed with 35000km's on the odometer.

I'm probably going to try to close the deal in the next 24 hr's and I've got a couple of short fuse questions before I complete the purchase.

1. Part of the agreement is for them to provide new tires. Since it is winter he has said that he will put on 20" Michiline Alpines. I live on Vancouver Island which is a temperate climate and we rarely get snow except in the mountain passes which I might drive through a few times a year. Should ask for different tires i.e. All Seasons? And is there a particular brand/quality that this car requires rather than standard tires?

2. It is a 6 speed vice the Newer 8 speed...is this a good transmission?

3 From what I've read this seems to be a real bone of contention on this site but since it is an older vehicle I WILL be purchasing a warranty and as recommended I will doing my due diligence and reading the small print. Are there any known loop holes that I should look for, I am buying a bumper to bumper 4 star from a company called Global.

Thanks, Rollie

if daily driving through winter, probably best to get the winter tires. you'll of course need summer tires, but each season will then have most appropriate rubber.

i've not driven the 8 speed, but my 6 speed if a decent trans. 8 speed is faster, with closer gear ratios and gets better fuel economy is higher top gear.

warranty is you betting the warranty company that you'll have more repairs than they thin you will. they will likely charge you a steep price for a very conditional warranty with copays each time you use it. i looked into the same and decided against. most of the "work" i've done in 9,000 miles and 22 months is normal maintenance and likely not warranty. there are a couple things i would have / could have pushed to have done while covered under a warranty, but to the tune of 15% of the cost of the policy. I'd rather keep the cash and pay as needed. if you have piece of mind with the warranty, and it gives you a net increase in driving enjoyment, then go for it.

That's not a lot of mileage and you're in a relatively mild climate so should have few worries. There seems four main common issues with these cars. 1) Jaguar has changed the part number for the replacement water pump eight times so far and even issued new parts to change the cooling system hose routing to lower the working pressures. We're holding out hope that the 8th iteration is finally the charm, but I suspect the XF will simply need a new water pump every 25,000 to 50,000 miles due to leaks. 2) In hotter climates or if parked frequently in the sun, the glue holding the dash pad leather disintegrates causing it to release around the edges or bubble in places so inspect the dash pad thoroughly as its an extremely expensive repair and unlikely covered by warranty since its cosmetic 3) There is something about a coupling in the nose of the supercharger that tends to go bad so you might want to search for info on that (mine's not supercharged) and 4) The cooling system has a lot of components made of PA66 Nylon which seems to tolerate a lot fewer heat cycles than any reasonable engineer would spec out with leaks seeming to crop up starting around 60K miles. The 6sp transmission tho seems to be pretty solid with very few posts about it. The 2012 is also subject to the Takata airbag recall. Parts are available and it may have already been replaced, but if I were you, I'd check and make sure they do it before you purchase. There's a slight risk they could cause cosmetic damage to the dash in the process so you'd hate to have that happen AFTER you buy it. One other piece of advice comes to mind too since I think it rains a lot there, make sure that the brake fluid was flushed on the maintenance schedule. People seem to commonly know they're supposed to change the oil, but forget about the other fluids. Brake fluid is hydrophilic meaning it absorbs moisture and is supposed to be changed every two to three years regardless of mileage. With such low mileage, I wouldn't be surprised if that hadn't been done (wish I had a dollar for every caliper or master cylinder I've tossed out because the insides were too far gone from corrosion).

The chances that it will need repairs exceeding the cost of the warranty is probably less than 50% and I've not ready of many people yet having to spend much more on repairs than the typical warranty. Yes, there's been an occasional blown engine, but those seem rare and who knows the extenuating circumstances. My hobby is fixing old cars so I choose to skip the used car warranties, but if it makes you feel comfortable, that's what counts I guess.

Welcome to the forum Rollie,

I've moved your question from X260 to X250 forum. X260 is the current XF from 2015 and X250 is the previous 2007-2015 version.

When you get the vehicle (it's rarely "if" when anyone posts about going to see a Jaguar!), please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Graham

Hi Rollie,
I live about 40-50 miles from you as the crow flies, and am aware of your climate which is dry and mild compared to anywhere else this part of the continent. I see no reason to go with dedicated winter tires. Either of the two state of the art all seasons (Michelin Pilot AS3+ or Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06) will give you outstanding performance in all conditions including on dry pavement very similar to the better summer tires and in winter or wet conditions very similar (except in deep snow) to the better winter tires. I drove my Jag to Butchart Gardens in the snow the winter before last with no problems, unbelievably beautiful. I would not worry about the dashboard issue unless the car was previously in California, Arizona, or the like. The ZF 6 speed is a very good gearbox with few problems.

Default Thank you!

Thanks so much for the great advice! I read the fine print on the "Global" Warranty and have decided not to get it, seems like the chance of something breaking that won't be in the expulsions is a great possibility. Thanks for the pointers on things to look out for.
Swimref, is yours AWD or RWD? I make some Tofino trips a few times a year and was more concerned about the summits

There is a jaguar dealership in the town where the car is for sale. Should I ask to have an additional inspection there and is the "supercharger nose cone" something that can be inspected?

Mine is rear wheel drive, but even so the best winter car I've ever driven (I've owned front drive cars for 40 years). I don't even bother with winter mode, but if traction starts to be a problem turn that on and you can go anywhere the road goes. I have only taken the Jag to Tofino once, and that was in summer, but I've driven the Cascade mountain passes many times in the wet and several times in the snow and ice. The time in Tofino I remember well, we were very late leaving Ucluelet with no real hope of crossing the island and making the ferry at Nanaimo, but traffic was very light and I drove it hard. All the speed signs were in kph of course, but I exceeded the same numbers in mph, it was quite a drive. Figured if I was caught I would play the dumb American that didn't know any better. Made the boat in Nanaimo by less than a minute.

That is just spectacular! Luckily we have those KpH signs. The dealership has a inspection form that they filled out but I’m wondering if I should take it to their local Jag shop for a full inspection as well? It’s in Kelowna. I’ve never driven the cocahalla But I guess I’ll find out, hopefully there’s not too much snow up there yet. I’ve decided not to take the warranty But it’s a big purchase so I’m questioning whether I’ve done my due diligence yet or not? What else can I do to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition, I’m not a car guy.

probably a great idea to get opinion from jag dealer - could also help you negotiations. maybe even have jag dealer appraise it for you

might cost couple hundred bucks, but the piece of mind would be worth it.

bent wheels and cracked - that's been by far my biggest issue. dealer can also verify for you they are all in good shape or not
