Default Can’t afford mot, can’t afford to sell..

Hi all,

I’m looking for any advice about a real pickle I’ve got myself into..

I bought my XF last year at auction and it’s been nothing but trouble. After spending over £1000 for a full service 9 months ago and addressing any issues, it’s just failed a mot with est repairs for another £1000.

That isn’t including how much to fix the screen with a persistant ‘reduced performance’ message that I thought was from letting fuel get too low, but didn’t go when I filled up.

The garage advised it isn’t worth spending any more money on and I should just move it on, but after failing to find the logbook I called DVLA to get a replacement. They informed me they never received my green slip to register in my name so I never received it, overlooked as I was very ill, in and out of hospital at the time.

They said I can only apply again which will take 4 weeks, meanwhile the car is sat at the garage and can’t come back to me as I have nowhere to legally park it up while I wait for it.

I don’t know enough to know if I have any other option other than paying to get it through the mot then selling at a loss, or keeping it and saving to get the screen fixed.

I am currently bedbound, but can’t afford another car when/if I’m up again and rely on it for mobility. I’m so stressed I can’t think clearly, if there is any suggestion of what would be best to do, thanks..

Ask a friend if they have any space on their driveway to store it for you? I would think that unless you know the garage well they might be/start charging you storage fees. Then find a local indie who can deal with the issues a little at a time, over your recovery period.

Do you know what exactly it is that is preventing it from passing MOT that will supposedly cost £1000? Maybe post that detail and see if any of our members have a suggestion how to fix it on the cheap or where to take it. A car forum is hardly the right place to get financial advice (by definition, WE are the exact opposite of financial wizards) but we might be able to advise on the actual repair.
