A week or so ago the car would not start, but about three tries later it did.
Yesterday the same thing happened again, and after about 5 minutes of repeated attempts still no go.
All I got was a small sharp "crackle" from the speakers.
I tried all sorts of things: pressing very hard on the brake pedal, getting out of the car locking it then getting in again, docking the key fob, nothing worked.
But after about 5 minutes of this sort of faffing about it suddenly started!
I got back home and plugged in my trusty iCarSoft i930 and it showed a Central Junction Box error code of B1009 - Ignition Authorisation.
Searching this forum and others and the interwebz brings up nothing of any use on that error code.
My battery is less than three months old and quite healthy, but I have hooked up the trickle charger/conditioner anyway.
Any thoughts?

 

Have you replaced the battery in your key remote fob?

Do you have the second remote key fob you can use for a few days and see if that works better?

 

Yes and yes, although I replaced / renewed the batteries in both of them at the same time when I first got the car nearly nine months ago.
But I suspect you may be right, and the key fob battery in remote #1 is starting to fade.
I will change remotes and see how it goes.

 

Usually when the key battery runs down (which is far too frequently, but I guess that this is after all early keyless entry tech) I get an error along the lines of "SMART KEY NOT FOUND" on the instrument panel display and I have to stick it in (or at least hold it near) the key slot under the dash.

I'd say this sounds a little more work than the battery being low, but worth checking.

 

The plot thickens!
I swapped key fobs for the spare (which has a fresh battery) and no problems yesterday.
But this morning the same thing - hit the start button and nothing happened.
Docked the fob and after three tries the car started.
When for a drive, got back home and checked again for error codes.
Still had B1009, which I suspect was a leftover as I didn't clear it last time.
But further checking with my scanner showed that this code is connected to mirror auto fold, passenger side mirror dipping in reverse, and memory seat functions.
All of which are working perfectly and always have.
So it's not B1009.
But I found some new error codes which I think are much more likely culprits.
Under the "Instrument Cluster Control Module".
B1000 - column lock authorisation
B1B01 - key transponder (twice)
B1B33 - target identification transfer (twice)
I suspect I have B1B01 and B1B33 twice each because the car has failed to start on two occasions now.
And possibly because I used a different fob each time.
I also suspect that B1000 is only vaguely connected and is a symptom not a cause.
As per usual nothing at all on the interwebz about these two codes.
I've started and restarted the car a dozen times since this morning's hiccup, and no hint of any problem.
I'm stumped!
