If the ball joint is good underneath on the wishbone control arm can I remove the nut... prize up the control arm...remove the old rubber boot... clean and grease the ball joint... put on new boot cover and circle clip and put the nut back on
Yes . You need to treat the threads with DW-40 or similar and clean out the hex inside the threaded part ---this allows you to prevent the ball spinning as you undo the nut. Mine separated by themselves. You also need to restrain the upright as you remove the nut.

brilliant stuff thanks when you say restrain the upright. Like a jack underneath it
Thanks 😀
the only time the 2 nuts under the bonnet holding the wishbone control arm on at the top would need to be undone is If i was removing and replacing the whole wishbone control arm.? Some have said the whole suspension strut needs to be taken out if I wanted to remove and replace the whole wishbone control arm ?
They are kind of all over and scattered around!
I have a 2010 XFR manual which should cover what you need?
But since you post no car info I am just guessing again?
Really helps to put it in your signature or in your post.
Problem is it's big @60GB and over 3000 pages. But I can upload it to some free website where your could retrieve it.

Did you ever put it up? If so, can I get the link as well! Thanks!
Looks pretty beat up. Once you release the ball joint you'll feel it loos and maybe click so you may have to replace. You have to remove the strut to pull the bolts. They slide inward toward the damper and too log to clear.

Just finished front and rear control arm replacements on the 2010 XF. Struts/shocks have to come off if you want to remove the bolts and hence the control arms. Back is not as bad as you just need to access from behind the liner in the boot/trunk. The front means you need to remove the wiper arms, plastic pan under the wiper arms, right side junction box bolts removed and moved up and out of the way, I also removed the bar across the top to access the nut. Left side was a but easier as once the pan under the wipers was removed and the coolant tank moved, it was a lot nicer to access the nuts. Torqueing the bolt up was not as bad as I expected.
