Default Cost of a set of TPMS?

I have been quoted or have found prices of TPMS from about $50 to $125 per wheel. I am being told the $50 is uncoded and some tire and wheel dealers need to buy them coded from the manufacturer.

Anyone with experienc on this? I know I need 315 Mhz.

I paid CDN$80 per TPMS unit for Jaguar spec after market units, they are all made in China and look identical to factory items, new modified style. Mine came coded with the codes stamped on each unit. My tire guy recorded the codes before installing them into the wheels in case these codes must be manually entered into my XF ECU. We shall see what is needed by way of coding in a few weeks when I discard my worn out snow tires and put the new rims on for the first time.

Thanks Jagular. One of the tire dealers gave me costs and similar info. I will likely go with that dealer.

I bought a new set of 4 of the 315mhz ones and after I installed them I drove for 1 day and the next day all 4 of them self learned with no programming. Awesome!

Default ez sensor

Some of our tire shops are using these, apparently a universal application that gets away from the aluminum/alloy type mount and uses a rubber type mount. Apparently the metal is the source of failure in some...so I'm told.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System - TPMS

They're still ~$90 in Canada which seems a bit crazy for a valvestem/pressure transducer/wireless electronic deal...

Wannajag, I think the programmable EZ sensor you posted is the one my selected dealer is using. He indicated to me today that they buy them and "clone" them from the existing sensor that is on the car. They have a programmin tool that does this. No ECU program at the dealer is requried. Total cost to me is $79 each. This seems to make sense to me. They get the mark up from the non-programmed sensor, so they make a few bucks, but not as much as the ones that would come from the Jag dealer at $125 each. (Costs are USD without tax).

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I am pretty much set with my winter set up, just waiting for the wheels and tires to come in. Will post photos when I get them.

They seem to be popular, you'd think they'd be cheaper than the OEM's by a fair bit, just easier to use the same unit on all the cars as opposed to stocking a bunch of variants...they have two frequencies 300 something and 400 something that I think covers most systems.

I dunno, maybe they're all quite interchangeable...

My tire dealer said that there are three versions that he uses that cover most all vehicles. The Jag XF SC (and likely all XF's) takes a 315 HZ.

How are they being coded to your car?

Not sure, what does that entail? I guess I would be able to take them to the dealer before or after the install?

If they are being mounted make sure you get the codes before they are inside the tires.

Yes, I understand you need to know what the codes are before they are mounted, although I have been reading there is some type of device that can transfer codes after they are on. Don't really know for sure. Seems like a money maker for everyone who is installing TPMS, and a pain for the rest of us who need them.

I say that because I had no luck last season getting mine enabled. I bought tires mounted on rims with TPMS and the car didn't see them. I figure this year I will be just putting up with it unless I crack the bead and get the codes. Then I would be paying the dealer I am sure each change over to activate! I swap the tires myself so that would tick me off.

Maybe with the power of the group here we can figure it out. I visited a number of tire shops and inquired whether they had a device that could "talk" to the sensors.....nada.

My tire dealer explained that the TPMS he sells will be coded by him in his shop from one of my existing TPMS without removing that tire from the wheel. His device reads my TPMS and codes the new ones. He said the car with not know the difference which set of tires is mounted. I will not need to redo it every year. Both winter and original summer sets will have the identical codes. He said he buys just three differenct types of TPMS and that they work for almost all cars that have been through his shop.

Can you ask them what the device is? Who makes it? I can then find a shop that has one if I know what I'm looking for.

I think the shop I go to can code them as well. I'm not positive, but I remember when they were mounting and balancing my Forgestars, they said one of the sensors was messed up and they swapped it for me free of charge. **IF that's the case, I'm guessing they had to code it, right?

If they swapped it, and it is working then they must of coded it.

I'll see what I can find out and confirm the process and post back.
