Default Cylinder head removal question

Hello all. I have a 2010 XF with the 5.0 non-supercharged engine that has an external coolant leak from a cylinder head gasket. Question is has anyone tried or been able to remove the cylinder heads from under the hood instead of dropping the powertrain out the bottom. I currently do not have access to a hoist to lift the body off.... Derek

I'll take a stab at helping you, but I have to add a "qualifier", first. Prior to owning a 2009 XF, I owned a 2000 Lincoln LS, V-8, which is a "cousin" to the XF. I believe that there were minor bore and stroke differences between the two engines, just to make them "unique", but I think the basic architecture is the same. I have a shop manual from the LS, and in looking over the cylinder head removal procedure, here are the "Cliff Notes"......

Yes, the head comes out from the top. The only thing that I see, that needs to be done underneath the car, is disconnecting the exhaust system and EGR pipe. After that, you:

A) remove the intake manifold;
B) remove the engine sound insulator;
C) remove the camshafts....caution, as tappets and shims are location specific;
D) disconnect clamp remove 4 bolts, remove water outlet pipe;
E) disconnect cylinder head temp sensor;
F) remove rearmost cylinder head bolts;
G) remove the cylinder head bolts, but there is a specific sequence for this step, just like tightening them;
H) remove the head (RH); the LH head is similar, except the rearmost bolt cannot be removed, due to lack of clearance. You hold the bolt "up" with a rubber band, as the head is removed.

The exhaust manifolds come off with the head.

There is more to it, and I'd consider getting a Chilton's manual, or something similar. However, this is the overview. Hope it helps.

Leadfoot is correct, according to the 2010XF Workshop manual i have the engine can stay in the car. You'll need to lift the front to get the exhaust manifolds off, and of course about a million things need removed before you can get to the heads, but the engine can stay in the car. Somewhere on this board is a link to buy the workshop manual that has pics and instructions, but i don't remember where. I think it was like $10, worth every penny on a project that big. Good luck!
