Default Do You Think My XF is Distasteful (aka Ghetto)?

Are you of the opinion that my XFSC on 22" wheels is distasteful (aka as ghetto to some)? Cast your vote. My prediction is 70% "Yes". This is just for fun and out of curiousity. I've been upsizing my wheels for too long now to be sensitive about the opinions of others. Obviously, I'm going to do what I like with my cars so no need to apply the "if you don't have something nice to say..." concept.

You can share your thoughts below, but make sure to vote above.

I think your choice is very clean looking and they fill the wheel wells nicely but its a bit extreme for me. My term would be "pimped out" but not in a derogatory way.

For that model of car, you chose very well. Very clean look.

Your choice for wheels is classy, so in no way your car looks ghetto. But, i do think they would look better if they were 2" smaller.

I like them. I would fear denting them on the road, but they look very high quality are they forged?

This thread is inflammatory and needs to be closed.

Suffice to say I raised the suspension settings on the Audi S4 I acquired from a PO of oriental origin back to stock ride height so that I could drive faster on our awful roads. I also removed the window tint so I could be admired as I did so. I put the chip back in he was too worried to use (309 hp up from 250 stock).

I bought real performance tires and lightweight rims, in stock size as I thought Audi engineers knew a bit more than I did about hopping up their cars.

The result is a fierce machine for attacking the roads where I live without slowing down for potholes or driveways. Each to his own of course but I do expect my cars to be driveable at their designed limits and beyond. Put big rims on and you just have to slow down.

Not to start a class war, but I am not a fan of those wheels on the Jag. I do think that style belongs on your 300C (which I used to own a 2005 Cool Vanilla 300C until last year) and not your Jaguar.

I guess I'm too old or too conservative or too out-of-touch....or too "something". I just can't warm up to the "all wheel, no tire" look.

It looks like the wheel of a conestoga wagon with a rubber band stretched over it...and then attached to a Jaguar!

No offense intended...but you asked for opinions :-)

Cheers
DD

I'm with you on this Doug and must also be getting old....lol
I have 19's on my Audi and a tyre profile of 35.......to be honest that would be about my limit, I couldn't imagine going with an even bigger wheel and less rubber.

The XF in question doesn't do it for me either!

Fair variety of responses. Mostly mildly negative. I appreciate them all.

Jagular - that was quite a tangent but I guess to be expected.

Thanks. Yes, they are forged. Couldn't see putting a cast rim on there.

Fun facts:
- I have about .6" less sidewall (yes, my OD is greater than stock)

- weight is almost identical to stock

- I don't drive my car at its designed limits

- potholes do make me cringe

I remember when you first shared these... They look good! Many people agreed on that. I don't like 22"s in general, but these remind me of the concept for the XF, (concepts from Jaguar of late have 20"+ wheels, more like 22".

I'd have to see it in person, but I'd say again... handsome wheels.

@D-D, I would not say that your wheels are distasteful, but then again I would not use Ghetto as a definition of distasteful in this context.

You say 0.6" less sidewall (less than what)? if your OD is greater than stock then acceleration will be slightly reduced. You'll never see the difference on the street.

LOL potholes make you cringe, I'll bet they make you do something stronger.

If your car makes you happy, then do what ever you want to it.

Personally, I would have thought 20" and a bit more rubber would have been a better bet.

But hey, it is not my car.

And yes, they do fill the arches, look like a nice style, just maybe a bit too much metal/rubber.

(hint avoid Ghetto as a negative adjective, it is a very emotive word, generally a noun, and to Europeans should conjure up an image of a very courageous people striving to survive in the worst possible situation that has ever been known. Check Warsaw Ghetto).

Thanks for the comments. I actually don't normally use the word "ghetto" in this context (it has its own connotations here in the States) although I'm not terribly sensitive to it. It was a tongue in cheek reference (as was this thread in general) to another recent thread in the XF forum where "ghetto" was used as a synonym for distasteful as it unfortunately very often is over here.

Oh, sorry, .6" less than the stock 255/35 on the XFSC. Yeah, the "taller" tire effectively changes the gearing ratio, correct? I can confirm no noticeable difference in acceleration.

Ah, so you missed the point I see. No matter.

And ghetto is distasteful and refers historically to Jews not black Americans. Odd that it would be co-opted by black americans with no understanding of the historical meaning.

No no, your point was made in your trademark way. Thanks for your input.

I agree. Ghetto is a distasteful word. It's also used as an adjective synonymous with distasteful.

It's also true that the younger generation, black, white or other, for the most part have no understanding of the historical context of the word. That's true for our youth and a lot of things. However, at the time the label was first applied to impoverished predominately black urban areas, the historical meaning was clear. The word has been "co-opted" for a long time. The disconnect with the history of it, far more recent.
