Default Does the trunk open all the way up automatically?

I searched the forum and google and couldnt find a definitive answer.

I have a 2009 XF s/c. My trunk does open but just a little. Do they open all the way up or just pop open? If they are supposed to open all the way up, do you think its just a matter of greasing the hydraulic arms?

Thanks

No, it doesn't open up. Mine opens about 3 inches. Some people have changed the shocks with still no success. There is a thread on the UK board about how to make it open all the way using a coach bolt and some guys have been successful using a 5mm spacer behind the stopper.

The stopper or what ever it's called is just behind the shock, it looks like a eraser. Pull it off, it snaps right out. You will see over time the damage and its dented it. So you can try and put a spacer behind and reinstall. Or you can take the route I have to go, which is tap the holes were the stopper goes and replace it with a coach bolt. Trunk will fly right open like it's happy to see you. The washer did not work for me. But for others it did.

Mine does sometimes, I think it has to do more with the ambient temperature than anything. When it's hot out it springs right open, but if it's cold it only opens a few inches.

I will assure you it's the stopper, it's what keeps tension when closed. Although, some have reported it working in different temps. But if you modify that stopper it will open up rain, sleet, snow, sun, no matter what.

Mine opens all the way above temps of around 20C or so. Below that it opens partially. When really cold, it opens maybe an inch without manual manipulation

I had the dealer put in new struts a few years ago, and that fixed it...for a while. Now I have no warranty, so I tried the washer method. Well, it definitely helped. Now, the trunk opens about halfway instead of two inches. My impression is that I need a new trunk strut. From the photo I got from the other forum, it looks like all you need is a flat head screwdriver to remove a cover and then slide the strut to the inside and it comes off. Does anyone have some tips on strut removal for me? Also, anyone know how much the strut costs?

I used 1/4 in. 20, button head allens. Taps in this size and thread are more common here in the US.

I finally did the same, using a 1/4" by 20 thread carriage bolt (US name for coach bolt). Note that you need a 1/4 by 20 tap to thead the hole from which you removed the small cap before you can screw in the carriage bolt. You also need to cut down the carriage bolt to a very short length (leaving only 3 turns of the thread on the bolt). Now, the trunk lifts up all the way if it's warm out and about halfway if it's very cold.

I asked a Jaguar dealer about the trunk strut (sometimes called lift support) and he said it was $51 list price each. I called the US distributor for the manufacturer of the struts (Stabilus), and they couldn't give me the part number with which to buy it aftermarket. There is a UK aftermarket manufacturer of these struts, but you have to pay for shipping to the US, at which point you may as well buy from a local dealer.

If anyone finds a good price or aftermarket source for the struts, please post the information.

Well, now that it's over a year and a half later, it is easy to find replacement struts (or lift supports as they are sometimes called). You need to do a search for SG466006, which will give you the part made by Sachs/Stabilus. Pep Boys lists it but they don't sell it for some reason. I found it on Amazon for around $21 each -- less than half what the Jaguar dealer was quoting.

Replacement should be very easy. I just replaced the same part for the engine lid on my 911 and it was a breeze. Pull out the clips top and bottom, then remove strut, repeat on other side after new one is installed on one side.

After I posted the above, I checked around and that's where I ordered mine from.

I ordered my Stabilus lift supports (same as the original equipment ones but they don't say Jaguar on them) two days ago and they arrived this afternoon.

I installed both sides in under 15 minutes and now the trunk lid flies open. I tested it after I installed just one side, and even then it went up much better and further than it did before.

The trick to the installation is to have a pick tool that has a hook on the end. Grab the spring clip with the hook and then pull it off with your other hand using needle nose pliers. I did the top first, then the bottom (the bottom is a little tight in terms of space, but there's enough room to yank the spring clip off).

To install the new one, first line up the bottom of the lift support with the ball that is attached to the body of the car and push it firmly onto the ball. DO NOT REMOVE THE SPRING CLIPS FROM THE NEW LIFT SUPPORTS. Next, do the same with the top end of the lift support. You might need to lift up the lid with your hand a bit to get the lift support to line up with the ball on the trunk lid.

That's it.

I'm in two minds about this. Mine usually just opens a bit but sometime goes right up.
It went right up once when I was the sports ground and it was pissing down rain and I was waiting for it to ease before I got stuff out.
I didn't notice until the boot got swamped.

Going right up is kinda flash but I think I might leave it as it is...
