Jaguar supplies a new drain plug. The washer, if there is a separate washer is not available from jaguar. I think I paid CDN$3.50 for a drain plug with sealing washer already fitted for my Audi. The washers have to sell for way more than they cost due to handling costs. I think Jaguar's thinking is a new plug saves time and the labour cost saving is more than the cost of the plug. For the DIY a new plug minimizes the risk of having a stripped, cross threaded or rounded off drain plug removed and nothing to put back in. Cost/benefit analysis suggests replacing the old plug with a new plug complete with seal makes perfect sense.

If you want to source only a new washer instead of a plug then I would recommend you buy a new plug once then you can take the old plug to a parts store and find the right washer to renew the washer. Then you will have a spare plug ready to use each time even if you encounter difficulties.

It's only $40, so seems worth it to me.

Seriously though, the drain plug cannot be reused? I know the crush washer shouldn't be, but the physical plug? That doesn't make sense to me...

Totally agree with Xeno. What are these new drain plugs made of? Plastic? Why can't they be reused Brutal?

They probably can be re used. It is false economy to do so.

Really! I have 120,000 miles on my LS and that's a lot of oil changes. Still using the same plug without any issues.

Jagular said, it can be re used, so i am assuming it's not one time use/made from a special material plug.

I know, makes no sense to me either. I re-use the plug, the o-ring, and have zero dripping between changes.
I think I'm going to drain some trans fluid and refill with the same quantity real soon, like someone suggested, slowly rotating out the old fluid but avoiding any "shock" to the gearbox. And after reading this thread, I may drive a few more miles between oil changes anyway-I've been observing the 3,500 mile interval (like I did on the Buell) but now that's too frequent I guess.

Hey Big Cat, I have 14 different cars and have not had any trouble doing the same as you. I asked about the material of the plug before because I genuinly believed that the plug was made of plastic and once it was teared off the thread no longer held. But hey its just a regular oll metal plug that can be used a thousand times. I think the oil will last a good 5 to 7 K at the most. Keep us posted on the tranny oil swap as this has proven to pay many times its price on my other Jags.

Any soft metal sealing ring is reuseable and you do not have to replace it. I use cooper head gaskets on my 580 cubic inch big block chevy in the race car because they are reuseable and seal very well against nitrous or blown applications. We have people that request to reuse the drain plugs so they dont pay for a $5-7 drain plug and ive never had issues with leakage on any of my engines/cars ever reusing drain plugs and sealing rings.

There is no drainplug on the 5.0 dammit! why do people keep talking as if there were... the 4.2 yes is a old *** engine, but on the 5.0 there is no drain plug. Also, when you try and get the filter from jaguar they tell you you have to buy it as a kit WTF oil + filter... i don't like Castrol, I like the real oils like Motul, Total, Red Line, Amsoil... in that order.

Dax, I have loctaed a source for the filter for the 5.0L on the internet. 25U$ with seal. As far as the 5.0L Brutal works at a Jaguar Dealership and as his avatar states is a certified tech. Jagular also confirmed there is a drian plug. Its just that dealer prefer to vac the oil out.

Stop scaring me!

DAZ is right there is NO DRAIN PLUG..
its a lower oil sump evacuation plug!!!! 13mm wrench or socket on the passenger side of the oil pan(US).
How in hell do you think we changed oil on the 5litre before we got the prized $1000 oil evacuators from Jaguar???

Glad that's cleared up!
Brutal, do you think there's any risk in draining through the evacuation orifice?

So there's a drain plug but it's not called a drain plug even though it functions as a drain plug? That's not confusing...

I'm thinking Brutal may have had his tongue lodged in his cheek as he was typing.

Roflmfao call it what you want, you can still drain the 5 litre the old way from the bottom(we hate it) or the top with a oil evacuator machine. Cheap ones are out there. I used to have one when i ran a mobile fleet service. You just stuck the tube down the oil dipstick opening....er metalic oil level determination wand

lets continue the fun by debating doing the oil change yourself vs taking it to the dealer for the other "stuff" they include...that in my case takes it up to $690. This includes the seat filters! Now some of the guys at work suggest that I of all people should have the seat filters replaced ASAP....but I think I can probably do without this, check the pollen filter and call it a day.

What am I missing? (I have all the equipment etc and have built cars ground up in my garage so I have the skills. Just concerned about the higher end vehicle and its sensitivities)

I don't have a dealer close so I have no option. Dishing 690$ would for such a simple thing would make me think. I have no idea what you mean buy seat filters. Can you clarify. If you don't mess with sensors or brake a switch or connector you should be safe. I serviced my XJ8 350 for many years.

the SC has climate controlled seats. It involves air moving through the perforations. Must be filters in there. Reminds me of muffler bearings. I could do this work in a fraction of the time.

This is what the email from them said:

. Just checked the total for the 48,000 km service and the parts required, labour is about 3-3.5hrs and the list of parts is below.
If you add it all together you are looking at just over $700.00. we normally allow 10% leeway just in case.
