Update:
brand new screen arrived from JLR UK, he fitted it and the problem reappeared immediately, flashed it and reinstalled, same.

Be borrowed a screen from a car on the sales lot, worked fine, tested several times, no repeat fault.

so has put the loan screen back in its host car and sent my new faulty unit back to UK for exchange, issue is the sheer length of time it takes.

so now they have had my car longer than I have.

am in a loaner car (Caddy SRX, it’s horrible)

will update ate when I know more

Update:
Dealer just called me, its costing $500 to ship screens back n forth and they only just admitted to me that it was my unit that was sent back to the UK, reconditioned and then sent to USA where it was discovered still faulty....

As a result the dealer is wanting to buy my car back at invoice price and call it a day.

Am gutted.

Got to think about it and tell him tomorrow.

If you’re emotionally invested in the car you could suggest the dealer fit a second hand unit which they should be able to pickup from eBay with a guarantee for less than $100 and, provided it’s from a car of the same year, shouldn’t need a firmware update. You’ll then be able to rule out the unit itself. However, unless the dealer is willing to honour the buy-back offer for a few months, I’d walk away and breathe a sigh of relief.

New Update,
Was driving home after looking at some replacement cars before making a decision and he has called me back.
He said "GOOD NEWS", they found a used unit and it will be here in 2 days, they will fit and test.
If it works, we're done and I get my car back, if it doesn't work they will reverse the deal and return my invoiced amount in full.

Bad news is, I've discovered there is nothing but "tat" on the used car market in that price range, so I'm buggered if they give me back my money, but I have lost all trust and faith in the car itself.

My plan at this stage is wait for them to tell me the outcome. I NEED a working car by next weekend for a planned trip that's been booked for 6 months, so i'll be driving my Jag or a runner, and then basically i'll be waiting for my injury money to come through from my auto accident back in Feb, and hopefully will then find something more desirable and trade in whatever I am driving at that time?

What a total nightmare this has been. Thank you for your support and advice so far.

Well, on the bright side you have a whole new anecdote to tell over a cold one and, who knows, maybe this will turn out to be a simple “plug and play” fix. Please let me know how it goes, as my plan is either to get a used XF screen for $100 and get it reflashed with XK firmware or, if the reflash is very expensive, source a used XK screen for $350. I can live with the repair cost, but the uncertainty around how to fix the issue is what’s really frustrating. Time for another chat with my helpful independent specialist.

Had the infotainment software reloaded earlier this week which initially worked, but the white screen of death is now back again. Next step is to replace the unit itself. If that doesn’t work then I’ve no idea what comes next.

To put your mind at ease (and sorry for a lack of updates, work got in the way) the screen replacement seems *touch wood, to have worked.
the car has been used often and has done a trip to Vegas and back and so far, all is good.

the whole episode has soured my enjoyment of the car somewhat and I think I’ll bite the bullet when (if) I get any insurance money and may become sensible and trade in for something brand new.

good luck!

New screen went in today and seems to have resolved the problem, although I’ll wait a few weeks before declaring victory.

So what I learnt from this experience is that screen faults are increasingly common as these cars age and whilst software reloads perhaps work for some, any amount of time spent diagnosing/repairing the fault will quickly reach the same cost as simply replacing the screen. This is a simple 30 minute job that involves unclipping dash trim, removing 6 screws to release the unit from the dash and a further 6 screws to get the screen out of its frame, then unplug 3 electrical connectors. Search on YouTube and you’ll find a video showing you how to do this.

I found an independent JLR specialist selling brand new units on eBay for a fair price and offering free advice and/or fitting, although I fitted mine myself. Link below:

Next job is to update the firmware and navigation maps with 2014/2015 discs, which I believe are the most recent for the XK. Probably not going to try more recent Volvo discs as apparently this limits some other features.

So the error struck my car today . Thankfully it looks as there is a fix by reloading through USB.

Does anyone know if fix applies to my car as well?

I understand the temptation to try a software reload, but the experience of Lord_P and myself was that the screen was faulty and the whole unit needed to be changed. Unless you’re able to do the reload yourself, it will probably cost 30% of what you’ll pay for a new unit and, as happened in my case, won’t work. If I’d found the seller on eBay sooner I would have cut to the chase and saved myself months of frustration. If you try the link my previous post you’ll get the details of the eBay seller who was very helpful, offers free fitting and may accept an offer as he has a few units to sell. Good luck!

For the record, my unit remains faultless since the swap and I’ve also loaded 2014/15 navigation discs

Maybe I got lucky . Was able to resolve the issue with an update through SDD JLR. It Took a while though ,about 2 hours, but it is back to full functionality, crossing my fingers it won't reappear.
