I bought mine CPO last year and it has been wonderful. If you like the sporty feel, my bias would be to go with the XFR. But that's personal choice.
Just test drove a Porsche panamera hybrid pre owned - very different car and although a technologic marvel it is rather dull (and over my budget). Can't get the jaguars out of my system. In comparison the XJ felt much nicer and the XFR much more nimble. I also noticed that the jags have a better ride than practically every other brand. Jag really have that emotional thing in their 'recipe', or formula - i am sure it isn't by coincidence.

Sounds like you really like and appreciate what the XFR has to offer so just go ahead and get it. Sometimes we tend to complicate things that are very simple. Your mission is to find the best car for YOUR money and you have accomplished that. Try another dealership if the one you dealt with has left a bad taste in your mouth but don't walk away from a car that has left that kind of impression on you.

Unless you really need a bigger car, I'd go with the XFR. Much more satisfying to drive, and rather more exclusive. Been on the track in XFRs and they are surprisingly very capable, yet comfortable to drive everyday.

Anyway..TWWMBO and I talked it over...We had the 03 X before for 8 years from new..it was classy, it was sharp, it was an attention getter, but it was a Ford...So we traded it for a Ford (Lincoln MKZ)..it was classy, it was sharp it had a great ride, it drove nice, it had more power and it was a head turner..

Then we tried the Jag XF..It was NOT a FORD, it was way classy, it drove awesome, it rode even better, it was graceful, beautiful fit and finish, not bad on gas and it was super powerful and it stopped traffic..nuff said.

If the additional size of the XJ isn't an issue it is more car than the steel XF.
The longer wheelbase, and hence turning circle, are likely to make the XJL feel much bigger despite similar weight. I haven't driven an XJ or XJL, so I can't say for sure how it feels, but that's my guess.

We have both the '12 XJL 5.0 and the '12XF 5.0.

The XJL is fit for a King. It was, by no stretch of imagination, voted as the most elegant car in the world, ahead of Rolls, Aston and Bentley by an journal. It gets a LOT more attention than the XF.

The XF, on the other hand, is the true sport sedan of the two. It may actually be a bit heavier than the XJL due to its steel construction but, it is definitely and noticeably more agile both under acceleration and handling.

The XJL is my car and XF is my wife's. My personal choice would be still be the XJL given how special it looks and feels on the road. Pure elegance. If I want something really fast, I got a sports car for that too.

Definitely go with the XFR. I bought a 2013 XFR this last February, and I don't think there's a better car at any price until you get deep into 6 figures. I sometimes think I may have also been happy with a Cadillac CTS-V, since they are cheaper and have some interior features I prefer, but I just think they are ugly and nowhere near as exotic as the Jag. No way I was going to pay more for a Mercedes, BMW or Audi though... less car, more $$$, less exotic...

Also as far as I know, the U.S. is one of the only places you can get Jags for such a discount to the German cars. In Europe, the Jag is similar in price to these cars. For some reason the reputation of poor resale value, being a "Ford" (although that's not the case anymore, and actually never really has been) and reliability issues really hurts Jags in the U.S.
