'Gearbox fault' showing - fault found!
Hi all,
Hopefully this may help people who have the 'Gearbox Fault' alert showing on the dashboard. Apologies if it's been covered before, but I think this is a more unusual fault. It occurred on my 2063 Jag XF 2.2 diesel, but presumably could happen to other models also.
It started out as an intermittent fault, and I convinced myself that wiggling the connections to the main control module behind the drivers footwell trim was curing it. However, it became permanent one day and I had to be recovered on a truck. When the fault occurred it also locked out the gear selector knob in whichever setting it was currently in.
The fault codes were showing intermittent issues with the gear selector module (it's the 8 speed ZF gearbox). This was changed but the fault was still present. It turns out there was an issue with one of the feeds to it. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the problem was caused by a break in one of the wires in the loom which runs between the gear selector module, alongside the driver's (UK spec) seat and to the main control unit. Nothing visible, so maybe a dodgy wire from new, or maybe the moving of the drivers seat forwards and backwards has affected it (but no visible damage or marking).
Lot's of time taken to find this, and it was fixed by splicing in a short length of wire to bypass the bad bit. Seemed better than disturbing the loom and risking more problems.
Hope this may help somebody. All the best, Daz
PS if I've put this in the wrong section or anything, feel free to move it.
