Default gear box fault - RESOLVED

well 2 years and 3 months of semi trouble free driving pleasure have passed. Now dealing with a gearbox fault, CEL and 1722 code - just glad it decided to show up after I got off the interstate!!!

She gets a piggy back ride tomorrow to the indie for a look. I've read the previous threads on this - so hoping it doesn't require replacement and can be repaired.

Either way, hope to have her back on the road this weekend - driving a Smart car just does not take the place of my Jag!!!

regards,
steve

I hope the solution turns out to be both relatively painless and relatively inexpensive. Good luck, and keep us posted....

Hope it's not too serious! I had a gear box fault that showed up with a Throttle Body fault (can't remember which one). I disconnected, cleaned, jammed and reconnected all TB connectors and the gearbox error never came back. So you see, it may well be a simple electrical thing that has nothing to do with the gearbox

well so far they found four codes in three separate systems that indicate a probable issue with the transmission speed output sensor; checked the fluid level and inspected the fluid. The level is o.k., but the condition of the fluid is burnt and black.

dropping the pan for further inspection

If you have not done so - check/replace the transmission fluid - sealed for life is BS.

Take it from one who knows take the plunge and have the transmission done correctly. Have them check and replace as necessary.

Gus - no doubt - read what you went through and don't want to go through that.

Gus -thanks probably should have been more clear on my statement as I've was searching the web and saw a used one for about $900 and rebuilt units anywhere from 1500-2500. A used leads me further into unknown territory - so most likely will rule that out.

I took it to Charleston Import Automotive off of Ashley Phosphate as it started off as a sensor and they give a discount for JCNA members. But when they dropped the pan and saw the shrapnel, they had Holt Transmissions do the rebuild.

Do you mind telling us how much the rebuild cost you?

total parts/labor was $3572. Tranny rebuild itself was $2300 which is comparable to what I found on line ($2250 with 12month/12kmile warranty +core and shipping)

Thanks. So was the additional $1200 all for labor (removing the old trans and installing the rebuilt one)?
