Digimurda,
Disconnect the (-) and touch it to the (+) The (+) does not need to be disconnected from the battery as long as there is NOTHING connected to the (+) terminal of the battery.. If you are worried about this, just disconnect both and hold them together for 30 seconds, Make sure you take off the (-) first then the (+) and put back the (+) first then the (-).
I have done this many times on my X350 with no ill affects what so ever.
Cheers,
knobby.

Opps Sorry, I mean as long as there is nothing connected to the (-) terminal of the battery.
You Can disconnected the (-) side, Make sure nothing else is connected to the (-) of the battery, Put the key in Position 2 then touch the (-) and the (+) leads together for 30 seconds. Just make sure you put the key back to the Zero position or better still just take it out altogether.
I'm so sorry for my typo.
Cheers,
knobby.

Or you can just not bother doing any sort of reset procedure at all. Whatever issues your car might have will just reappear.

As I said before this is how you reset the ECU (at least on the X350) I really don't want to steer you wrong with your 09 XF so hopefully someone on here who is more familiar with the XF will be better informed.
sorry I could not be of more help.
