Just wanted to say hello on the forum. I’m a Brit living in DC, so I’ve been looking for a Jaguar for quite some time to assert my Britishness. I’ve been watching auctions and visiting sites as I wanted a “deal” and a project car to add value and get to know.
I’ve been stood in the rain looking at XK (150s), s-type Rs and smashed up f-types. Everything has been selling for silly money or was too far gone for me. I’ve probably watched 50 auctions at this point.
I joined an auction today and this XFR seemed to be going cheap, so I pulled the trigger for $2,000. Seemed like a bargain, despite the damage, given that it “starts, runs and drives”. I didn’t get time to see the car so I’ve bought it totally unseen (terrible idea I know!). It’s on 95,000 miles with a clean “title”.
It’s arriving tomorrow and I’m excited but nervous. The draw of that 510hp and the low price was a steal, but it could be a dud. My snap bidding / man logic thought it’s worth 2k as a parts car if nothing else!
My questions for this group are:
- where should I start tomorrow? I was thinking quick code read (engine management light was on in the running picture, but it’s an after market exhaust and no TPMS in the terrible after market rims. Check coolant pressure? Oil change? Head gasket test? I’ll be throwing away some of the terrible modifications tomorrow too!
- Medium term, I need to fix that passenger side front wheel. That’s the main damage I think. The passenger wheel is a 2pm when the drivers is at 12pm, so hoping it’s arms and track rod ends (ties). Any advice here welcomed.I also want to have matching (original) wheels on this - so want to get that moving too as well as front bumper fix.
- Does anyone know this car? Looks like it was owned by someone seriously in to the jags, which could be a blessing or a curse.
If it turns up and it’s terrible, I’ll let you all know so you can come get some parts!
Well with all the problems the main question will be can you DIY this?
Do you know how to use and do you have an operating SDD system?
Cars are sent to the auction for a reason and remember they have all been looked over by the pro's BEFORE it gets to any public auction. No easy fixes despite what the ad says.
Thank about it? If it was something simple or cheap why would they dump the car?
Next yes you can part the car out. Have you ever done this? It's a royal pain in the butt! Do you have a place to stack a junk car for the months it will take to part it out? Will your neighbors or the city or the HOA come knocking on your door to make you get rid of the junk car?

- Yes planning to DIY, I’m an electrical engineer by trade and have the workshop documentation so I’m not too worried. This is also our fourth car, so if it takes a year so be it.
- This isn’t an insurance salvage vehicle, it was in an accident though. It was running fine when it hit whatever it hit.
- I have a friend who breaks jags, who’ll break it down. It was more of a joke than something I’d do by having jag parts in my bath.
No your getting prepared and that is the key!
Good luck and do post back as this forum is my number one tool for fixing my car.
SDD is a pain so plan to waste some time on it. Again we have hundreds of threads on SDD so some searching will be required.
The car does have some red flags for me?
Has the after market metal intake system and K&N filter stickers. So whoever had it did at least some minor modifications. So be ready as you "might" find some odd stuff.
