Default iPhone 5 Compatibility Concerns

Hi All,
I'm actually surprised I'm the first to mention this. As you all now know, the iPhone 5 will have a new adapter. So I am wondering how long it will take to get OEM cables from Jaguar that are compatible?

Supposedly the new Lightning adapter may not support "iPod Out" functionality which would make it useless for our cars! See here:

Apple Lightning adapter compatibility -- Old speakers not supported

Thoughts?

Sounds like the only option is to play your music thru audio streaming Bluetooth. My 2012 plays my i phone 3 without plugging it in. I'm pretty sure this featur only works with 2012 models

I just bought a used iPod nano off of eBay for $40 and loaded it up with 8gb of music and put tin shuffle. Never take it out, just leave it run.

Typical of Apple to come up with the next big thing that will require a lot more next big things to get it work with all your old big things.

Exactly! I am an Apple convert - all my devices are Apple, but they are changing as a company. Given that for an iPhone 5 I will need new docking capabilities around the house and cars anyway, I may as well try a Samsung Galaxy next time around. This is the second thing they have done of late which is a cynical business move rather than one driven by advancement of design or technology, as far as I see it. The other thing was my 18 month old iMac not being allowed to be capable of display mirroring with an Apple TV, when my lower spec but newer MacMini was able to...

Apple's amazing story has always been one of ups and downs - here comes another chapter...

It's pretty ridiculous they didn't go with a normal USB mini port. That lightning port is a joke. That port was created for one thing only: to squeeze more money out of all the Apple users.

The adapter they are selling when the phone comes out may not work with the car. The USB adapter which comes with the phone has iPod out but I don't believe it will work via the USB port in the XF (at least not in the 09-11 years).

Before you all grizzle too much - 'iPod out' is not what you think it is. Check the interwebs to discover what this really means before complaining!

I know what it means I don't need to search. I don't have an iPhone and I'm not going to waste money on one. I was complaining about Apple not using a USB mini port like they should have. Everyone should be pissed about that. If they used a USB mini port all accessories and car ports would be universal. In my opinion it's ridiculous car manufacturers have Apple ports at all. Put in a USB port and make Apple figure out how to get there phone to work with some "super special" adapter they can sell you.

Putting your personal preferences aside, are you aware of what both the previous 30-pin and the new 9-pin ports can actually do, and why Apple are not wanting to limit their connective technology?

If you have no intention of buying an iPhone, and have no need for an Apple port, then the XF comes with a USB port - just for you.

For the same reason, I don't care what ports are offered on any car, so long as A2DP bluetooth works.

Car designers are only offering what the public demand.

But, catering to the connection of a proprietary interface is a silly waste of engineering resources. Not to mention support resources.

There is a *segment* of the public that wails very loudly about their favourite tech fetish. That is not the same thing as the public at large.

USB is a universal standard (USB.org - Welcome) which serves a greater audience than the proprietary interface of any single vendor.

Let's not even get into the matter of the bluetooth lockdown which prevents generic bluetooth devices from working with iphonies.

SO this is a general whinge about iPhone in the iPhone compatibility thread with the Jaguar XFR. Perhaps there should be a different thread related to why the USB port on the XF is there, and what this caters for, given that the interface is so limited, and won't make coffee.

Enjoy your 'discussion', folks... I'm off.
